Is Jennifer Lopez in “denial” about Alex Rodriguez cheating? That’s what a few outlets want readers to believe. Gossip Cop can reveal what’s going on.

Earlier this month, the National Enquirer claimed Rodriguez cheated on Lopez with a “mistress” named Lauren Hunter. His camp denied the allegations, and accused Hunter, a former girlfriend, of trying to extort him. With Lopez standing by his side, the supermarket tabloid’s sister outlets have been scrambling to back up the original report by insisting the infidelity claims are true and alleging the singer is just in “denial.”

“Despite reports he’s been unfaithful, Jennifer Lopez still sees Alex Rodriguez as her knight in shining armor,” OK! says in its current issue. The gossip magazine never acknowledges in its piece that it was the dubious National Enquirer that sparked those reports, nor is it recognized that no legitimate, respected news source has confirmed the cheating allegations to be true. There’s a major credibility problem here, which is why OK! is being used to spin the situation and make the couple look bad.

The publication asserts Rodriguez has “managed to crawl out of the doghouse,” and Lopez is “buying” his explanation that a former flame is trying to blackmail him. A so-called “longtime pal” is quoted as saying, “It’s kind of unbelievable, but Jen is taking his side [of] the story… Once they talked, she ate up every morsel of his story.”

The outlet’s supposed source continues, “She’s actually telling friends how she feels sorry for him, that he’s being extorted by a greedy ex. But her close friends feel like she’s just living in a complete state of denial. It’s like something in her needs to believe it’s not true.”

Or perhaps, you know, it could actually just not true. As stated above, no outlet has independently confirmed the cheating allegations to be accurate. And tellingly, the ones that are regurgitating the claims are the National Enquirer’s sister publications, all run by the same publishing company with staffs sometimes overlapping. RadarOnline, for instance, is also trying to make it seem like Lopez is “delusional” and in “denial,” and so it seems this is all an attempt at damage control.

Rather than admit Lopez and Rodriguez are genuinely happy and unaffected by what appears to be a manufactured scandal, these outlets rather make it seem like the performer is just foolishly living in a fantasy world. Yet it’s these very tabloids and webloids who are known for peddling fantasy over reality, choosing fiction over fact again and again. So it would seem the problem is with them, not with Lopez. Should something change, Gossip Cop will reevaluate, but for now, these continued claims should be viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism.
