Jennifer Lawrence: “In Hollywood, I’m Obese”

Jennifer Lawrence refuses to conform to the sometimes rigid physical expectations of showbiz.

In the December issue of Elle, the Hunger Games star says, “In Hollywood, I’m obese. I’m considered a fat actress.”

She jokes, “I’m Val Kilmer in that one picture on the beach.”

“I eat like a caveman. I’ll be the only actress who doesn’t have anorexia rumors,” reveals Lawrence.

And that’s just fine with her.

The star explains, “I’m never going to starve myself for a part… I don’t want little girls to be like, ‘Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner.’”

Lawrence’s issue of Elle hits newsstands on November 13.

    Jlaw is an idiot only in her own messed up head is 125lbs at 5ft 9in obese in hollywood Natasha Richardson was the same height and 138lbs outside of pregnancy and she never said anything as remotely stupid as this. just cause this bitch was nominated for an oscar doesn’t make her the greatest actress in the world dedication to craft does

    We need more Jennifer Lawrence actresses in Hollywood and less of the “Angelina Jolies”! :) Hollywood doesn’t come close to representing the average population in size or in anything else for that matter, and it can only be unhealthy for girls who look up to their favorite actresses.

    Actors gain and lose weight for role all the time, cut hair, learn new skills. Part of being an actor. Remember Tom Hanks in Cast Away? How fat he was and how skinny he got for the part? Annie H.? Jennifer telling us that she will not starve for the role is silly. Her body weight is perfect but she IS TOO FAT FOR KATNISS- all those actors are well nourished and that is conflicting with the story- regardless if the author herself though that Jennifer was perfect for the role. It is unfortunate that her role was associated with a labor camp kids- image. Imagine if she played in Slumdog Millionaires and “refused” to be skinny and try to pass for a slum kids.Just stop defending yourself by trying to convinced us that you are” not skinny” because you care for teens girls not eating their dinners. You don’t give a hoot about then, why should you?

    Also ther previous role of redneck girl-in The Winter’s Bone- left her with an image of a Bristol Palin type of a girl- big and bony. All actors are type cast somehow. If that is her only problem than she has no problems in life and should consider herself blessed. No person ever pleased everybody. No possible, not human.

Who wants to look at Jennifer and have secret desires?If we had 10 Angelina Jolies we wouldn’t have an economy issue here.

    I’m glad she’s addressing this in a positive way. She’s a great looking twenty-two year old who shouldn’t be pressured into starving herself. By non-Hollywood standards she’s thin.

    I disagree, Katniss actually had a little meat on her bones in “The Hunger Games” because she could hunt. As far as losing weight for a role, it is extremely unhealthy and they do have CGI. It’s not actually necessary but actors do it because it increases their awards buzz. She also wasn’t referring to those roles, she’s referring to roles playing normal women where Hollywood expects actresses to be underweight on the bmi scale while playing healthy weight women because anything other than underweight is considered unattractive. They are horrible standards and I give Jennifer a lot of credit for fighting back. She’s doing it in a positive way and if she doesn’t get roles, her feeling is so be it.

    Do you realize the irony in your statement? It’s not ok to force the Jennifer Lawrence tastes on the rest of the world, but wanting more Angelina Jolie’s in the world is perfectly ok?

    IMO, Jolie is not what the average woman looks like. She’s way too thin, has no body shape whatsoever and her face is not appealing.

    But that’s the great thing about having an opinion.

    Everyone has insecurities with their bodies. Even beautiful people have them. I believe when Jennifer started the business, many agents and manager probably told her to lose some weight or get something done with her body. That’s how the business work. To fit some mold, some producers or directors want. And it’s all about image too. When she got the lead Katniss for Hunger Games, there were many fans outraged about how fat she was and how she didn’t fit the role. Now, fans love her and the movies. I am glad Jennifer has good sense and good head on her shoulder. She must have great support system (family and friends) and positive outlook in life to survive all the negativity in Hollywood. She has that spunk and sense of humor for many fans and me to like her. This girl will be around for long time.

    Absolutely insane… I wish I had a body like Jennifer. She looks amazing. Her curves are great and she looks healthy… anyone who says she needs to loose weight should be charged with attempt of murder… because that person will start a new wave of anorexia deaths…

    Not once have I or any actresses I know been asked to lose weight or change here in LA. You are usually cast based on if you already fit the vision of the project or not. Perhaps when you are a big name, it happens to keep a competitive edge but Hollywood isn’t as rigid as people think. People come into castings looking how they always look. If it’s your agent telling you to do something different with your body, then it’s probably time to take your talent to another agent that believes in you.

    I’m betting she was asked to lose weight for her role in Hunger Games, not because she’s over weight but for role reasons (she was playing a hungry starving girl) and this request got taken the wrong way. I see lots of figures like hers in Hollywood and if anything the overly skinny thing is less popular.

    Did you watch the movie or read the book? Katniss hunted for her family, not herself. Her family ate and she sold the kills. Katniss was portrayed as hungry (do you not remember the bread scene with Peta?)

    You are right and I do not like her in the role of Katniss I think she is beautiful just as she is….. My vision of Katniss is a smaller and thinner person. Just don’t buy her as Katniss at all nor Josh Hutcherson’s role as well. Terrible casting.

    BMI scale were so pushed down that I am ambarassed to write”obese” on a chart for a patient with 168 lbs, avagare looking. Normal glucose levels were pushed down too. You have to be at 99mg/dl , below 100. It used to be 120. !

    The bread scene with Peta was before she could hunt where she was a young girl whose father died a few months before and her mother was catatonic and no one was taking care of her or her sister. Yes she hunted for her family and sold skins, but she ate herself. She was a physically strong survivalist by the time she actually participated in the games. She wasn’t fat and was on the thin side, but she wasn’t starving at the point the movie was set in. And yes, I read the book.

    Well I like Jennifer I think she is a very good actress is she the best out there no but she is good. She is a very pretty young lady and she is not fat by any means. I will admit that when she was picked to play Katniss I was not excited and it had nothing to do with her weight I just did not picture her as Katniss did she do a good job yes great no but I am happy with how it turned out. She will be fine in HW just an FYI out there to people who feel the need to tear down any actor or actress be their look how they act or whatever you do not matter if the producers/studios like them that is all that matters.

    @Kiwi no I’m not old Natasha happens to be one of my favorite actresses thats why she came to my mind readily and Revealvance goes in cycles. this girl won’t be around in 20 years not my opinion but hollywoods on history of discardging worthy actresses after a certain age or attempting to. if she’s so called talented weight shouldn’t matter. @Jackalexandria some of those celebs campaign for politicians because they feel it’s their duty and some of them are actually alot smarter than they get credit for Glenda Jackson for example has been in british Parliment for nearly 40 years. a stars didn’t relinquish their rights as a citizen to be in the television/film business

    J. Lawrence played unique role in Winter Bones. This actress is considered very talented by men and women. Her acting skills are incredible professional, specially when it comes to such a young woman. I understand you are expressing your opinion, but I think you having some issues with this girl. Fair enough, you don’t need to like her, but I don’t think you have that instinct to tell if she will be or not “around” in 20 years. By the way, I am old enough, and I have no clue who on earth is Natasha Richardson.

    in the movie, there’s a part where katniss is able to climb a tree because she is lighter than the others. i cant agree with jennifer lawrence on this. although we all KNOW shes gorgeous and does not need to lose weight at all, katniss, as a character, is very skinny and underfed because of her background. i applaud anne hathaway for being so devoted and losing the weight for the sake of the character.
