Jennifer Lawrence: ‘I’d Rather Look Chubby On Screen And Like A Person In Real Life’

Truth rating: 10

(Marie Claire)

Jennifer Lawrence graces the cover of the new South African Marie Claire, and The Hunger Games star is speaking out again about celebrity weight issues.

The actress, who’s said in the past that she’s considered “obese” by Hollywood standards, tells the magazine that she has no intention of caving to the unrealistic body image promoted in movies.

“I’d rather look chubby on screen and like a person in real life,” explains Lawrence.

As for changes she’d like to make, Lawrence says, “My New Year’s Resolution is to stand up for myself. It’s hard for me. Nobody wants to be disliked. You always want to be polite and be nice.”

She adds, “I tried to find a balance in saying what I mean and still being nice. I can’t do it. I have this ‘okay’ attitude and everything. I end up allowing myself to get walked over and resenting it.”

When it comes to her free time, Lawrence doesn’t have much interest in the party scene.

“I don’t like going out that much,” says the actress. “I’m kind of an old lady. After it’s 11, I’m like, ‘Don’t these kids ever get tired?’ When I’m out, I think about my couch.”

I don’t even know why some people are critical of her “weight”, she’s still thin by normal standards. She looks great and shouldn’t be pressured/criticized into starving herse;f/

  • Guest

I always always liked her but thought she tried way to hard to want people to like her and think she is perfect I glad she has seen the light and will not fall into the cookie cutter actress we have way to many of them. I agree be yourself that is truly when your most happy.

  • tia maria

she seems to be the only person who always talks about her weight in literally every interview

  • Amy

It’s not like she just randomly starts talking about her weight. The interviewer asks her about it and she answers. It all started when people called her fat when she was cast as katniss, and people have been asking her about it since. You can’t blame the girl for ‘always’ talking about her weight when really it’s the interviewers who are always asking questions about it.

  • Amy

Because the interviewer asks her questions about her weight. Can you really blame the girl for answering the question she is asked?

  • Just saying

Well it’s always the headline of every interview, don’t get me wrong I don’t dislike her, I’m just saying its old news. I guess there’s nothing interesting coming out of her mouth…..

  • Just saying

Exactly……maybe nothing else to talk about

  • dannehlicious

Is she supposed to change her opinion about her weight every time it’s asked? She gets asked the same question over and over, so she’s going to give the same answer over and over. Not her fault.

  • Just saying

Like I said maybe nothing interesting to talk about….

  • Guest

Love you Jen! You’re AWESOME and BEAUTIFUL!

  • JCA

Not many actresses get an Oscar nom. before they turn 22. She’s talented and can play drama, action, comedy. How many actresses her age can say this?

  • Mary

Journalists always ask her about her weight and she answers. You know, one of corny girls’s main concern is weight, they’re that shallow and Jen, thankfully is not skinny like most of them, that’s why original journalist always ask her for weight issues.

  • Naevia

Did you bother to read the whole interview? LOL Sorry for you but other actresses’s time is over. Now it’s time for Jen and you’re gonna see her in many interviews and talk shows. Luckily her answers are interesting, funny and con’t contain -fucking- ehh, huh, emmm, yeah

  • Martina

Chill out, I believe what @justsaying meant is that it’s get boring to read about the same thing, nobody blaming Jen for anything, neither talking about her in a bad way. I had that feeling too, when I saw the interview, but then I started to think and asked myself…..” Is this that serious issue in Hollywood if she talking about it that much?” Maybe it is, and we don’t know that. Maybe she is trying to create awareness about the Hollywood body standards that she is fighting against. It upset me little that she could be under so much pressure. That will let you feel insecure and depressed. In my opinion, skinny girls are not in fashion any more. Specially men likes curvy woman. I believe that twiggy girls are old news and boring.

  • LOL

You know, Jennifer is a woman with boobs and a pretty ass, her body is rounded and not flat and skinny like most of the actual actresses. She’s not Hollywood type girl because she cares about other things than just weight, something not very usual nowadays, that’s why journalists always ask her about weight. Do you understand?

  • leila

You like junkie types, don’t you? LOL

  • Val 5.

I do not think she gives a different interview to each magazine which she made the cover, most of the time they just recycle more her recent interviews.

  • Val 5.

we don’t get a Oscar nom at 20 years old just with luck

  • Amanda Weller

I’m all for trying to promote acceptance to all body types and I’m glad that she wants to try and teach girls that your weight shouldn’t matter. However, if that’s what she truly wants, she shouldn’t be saying that people who are thinner than her and are ‘standard hollywood size’ are not real people. It just adds to the problem. And as for she has to answer questions when people ask about her weight that’s bullshit. There are people like Anne Hathaway and Scarlett Johansson who call out interviewers for their sexists and shallow questions about their weight and exercise routines that they do to get into shape for their roles. If she wants her weight to truly not be a matter anymore maybe she should start asking interviewers why they can’t come up with an interesting question about her career instead of something related to her weight and looks.

  • J

Love Jennifer, but jfc she doesn’t need to answer every single question about her weight. She’s a bright girl, she can simply not answer the journalist or change the subject. It’s bordering on Jen Aniston and the babies type of thing now….It is getting so old. Hope she gets an Oscar nomination, but I also hope she doesn’t win over Marion Cotillard or Jessica Chastain.

  • Marie

Jennifer your gorgeous! Dont let anyone make you feel bad because these actresses all look like they haven’t had a decent meal in months. I hope she gets another Oscar nomination! and i hope she wins! she is such a lovely girl

  • Marie

    .

  • Just saying

Yes ….. Big boobs? Ok got it! Haha

  • Notfat

I’m sorry but I really don’t understand why this girl keeps going on about not being thin, when in reality she is thin. This is not a chubby girl, but she seems to want the media to think she is and that she is proud about it. I don’t think she is really helping the cause she thinks she is fighting for. While she is trying to convince everyone else that she is chubby, she is sending a message out to all the other non chubby girls that they are chubby to. The more she goes on about it the more insecure she looks. She has no need to defend her body. If she really was so happy about how she looks then she would feel no need to defend herself to every person of media she comes across. Honestly there is nothing worse then a skinny girl who goes on about her non existent weight problems.

  • Just saying

Hey relax they’re rich we’re poor we need to stick together lol my point is she’s always discussing her weight period… And are you referring to mmmm let me think the most popular and famous young actress right now? Haha relax we get ourselves too involved in their lives….

  • ule

    I love this girl.

She’s funny, real, charismatic and actually HAS TALENT!

She has shown that she doesn’t need an scandal, a relationship or anything “hollywood” to make the movies that she wants to make. She is in a relationshi and she has handle it like an adult so the media can’t take advantage of it!

She is showing that TALENT and HARD WORK (and not tabloid drama) is actually the most important thing!

She is getting the Oscar and she deserves it so much! Congratulation, beautifull!

  • Amy

Did you bother to read the rest of the interview or did you just read the title of this gossipcop article and decide to just nag about the weight comments? I don’t know how many times people have to say this but she only discusses her weight because she is asked about it constantly. Sidenote: kristen stewart may be really famous (i’ll give you most famous i guess, even though emma watson, emma stone, and jennifer lawrence could all give her a run for her money as most famous young actress) but her being the ‘most popular’ is your opinion.

  • Lily

I never got this need to somehow bash Kristen while praising Jen. The comments about “scandal” and “umms” are clearly referencing Kristen. Jen and Kristen seem to really like each other and have said lovely things about one another. Jen said some super sweet things about Kristen to USA Today in an article I just read. Kristen said some lovely things about Jen in another article I read. Both went above and beyond the standard “oh she’s great” line that many actresses give. Jen is cool girl who would probably find it bullshit that a few of her fans feel the need to make negative comments about Kristen every time they say something nice about Jen, and vice versa. Say what you want about Kristen, but she never struck me as a mean girl catty type. Meanwhile, Emma Watson said she had dinner with Jen and Kristen and said nice things about both of them. Why do people feel the need to pit young female actresses against each other? It’s so sexist. It’s especially ironic when you consider all these actresses have only said nice things about one another. Meanwhile, you have Sean Penn and other male actors making digs at one another, Amanda Seyfried making a bitchy remark about how “she likes underwear” after Anne’s snafu, etc…but for some reason people fixate on creating false feuds between actresses who seem to truly like one another.

  • Lily

This. I love Jen, but I wish she would take a cue from Scarlett or Anne and not feel the need to call other people lollipops or not real if they are super thin. It doesn’t help at all with what she is trying to do. However, Scarlett and Anne are both older (I think it’s different handling this stuff in your early 20s versus being over 25) and have more experience in handling the situation. I would love if Jen just said, “my weight is boring and everybody knows how I feel about it, so let’s talk about something more interesting.” The problem is that Christina Hendricks once did that, and everyone called her a bitch. It’s a fine line.

  • Lily

I love her too, but I’m not sure she deserves the Oscar over Jessica Chastain or Emanuela Riva. All three were fantastic. If Jen doesn’t win this year, she has a good shot next year with Serena since the academy favors drama.
