Jennifer Lawrence’s “I beat Meryl Streep!” exclamation at Sunday’s Golden Globes raised eyebrows among viewers who didn’t understand it was a direct movie reference.

On Tuesday’s “Late Show with David Letterman,” the Best Actress winner explained, “It was a quote from First Wives’ Club.”

Lawrence went on to discuss how surprised she was that many observers didn’t get the joke, including Lindsay Lohan, who tweeted that night, “And no1 should ever mess with a legend, such as Meryl Streep.”

The Silver Linings Playbook star told Letterman, “I had no idea Lindsay Lohan was going to take it to the Twitterverse… But Twitter is very upset.”

So, what does Lawrence have to say those offended by her supposed dig at Streep?

Jennifer and Letterman seem to get along very well! so charming! :-))

  • Raven Little

Ms. Lawrence is rather arrogant and I’m not a fan. I find it odd she’d believe everyone would know what she meant.

  • http://twitter.com/cody_landman Cody Landman

I saw that movie once when I was kid, so I don’t remember, but even if it wasnt she obviously meant it as a joke. and Lindsay really has no business giving her input on other actors/actresses anymore. she lost that right a long time ago.

  • Kiku

Even if no one knew what she meant it is clear it was meant as a joke and not insult!
At the very least, “I beat Maryl Streep” shows that Maryl is someone who’s hard to beat. So it’s a compliment.

  • Tony

First… Kiku is an idiot! Second… there’s truth in jest! She should not have said it for obvious reasons. Don’t assume everyone will get your humor. It was a crass moment, and not funny. And she does come across as arrogant at times, especially when she acts like all this acting stuff is beneath her, but was on hand to receive this award!

  • Tony

    You’re an idiot!

  • Arrogant

Then she goes and insults everyone who didn’t get her “joke” by calling them “idiots”
on national TV such insolence. She comes off as phony by calling herself names yet she dresses up to a T. Too bad her head is already swollen.

  • Ugh

Girl is loving her fame… maybe just too much!

I find Lawrence to be refreshingly loose and funny and far from arrogant. Chill out, Raven. And check out Silver Linings Playbook. She’s great in it and it’s a great movie.

Tony–you’re a rude little man. Lawrence has a refreshing take on her job–it ain’t rocket science. And she’s having fun. Why don’t you try having some, too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/RTCastleberry R.T. Castleberry

She’s a kid. And she’s refreshingly surprised at what’s happening. Lighten up on her.

  • Wow

So this chick is getting unfounded hate now just like Kristen Stewart

  • Talia

found silver lining playbook to be a bit boring although when chris tucker was in a scene it was funny. love how people are trying to defend the meryl streep joke which nobody at the show really laughed at, was kind of disrespectful. doubt she would have said it if meryl was actually there

  • casey

it was a tacky comment…and she should not have said it….it was not funny and very inappropriate……….i agree she is a little full of herself….i am sure meryl streep would never comment on it ,,she has to much class….jennifer lawrence should take a lesson from her…..big blunder Jenn.

  • casey

it was childish….it was not funny…

  • Heidi

totally agree with you, it was not a funny joke whatsoever, and I did not think her performance in silver linings is oscar worthy at all, liked the movie overall but hey it wasnt no Argo thats for sure!

  • guest

The fact that she had to explain what she meant indicates in it’s own that she shouldn’t have said it. She’s a smart girl, she should have known not many people would not get her joke and consider it an insult.

  • Jr

We shouldn’t be surprised that another actor in Hollywood is arrogant. I don’t remember the line in First Wives Club either, but Meryl was home with the flu. I would be interested to see what she had to say. Meryl seems to have a lot of grace and probably wouldn’t criticize her. She should listen to the song “O Lord it’s Hard to be Humble”.

  • Haters will Hate

It doesn’t seem to matter who it is, there is always that small group of society who have to nit pick and put down others. Jennifer Lawrence in the scheme of things is just a child, young people say stupid things all the time. Doesn’t mean she needs to publicly vilified. People really need to lighten up.

  • @just_lena_

    Hey jennifer bad guy: Osama
    President: Obama
    Got it?? Your welcome!

  • abotwin

She shouldn’t have quote a movie at the freaking golden globes? I beg to differ. Those idiots who didn’t understand the joke and couldn’t be bothered to look on the internet should have kept quiet.

  • red neck girl

Jennifer is a red neck girl, second Honey Boo BOO. She has a team of people to dress her in a red dress and prep her. You hasn’t show her horns as yet but she will. She looks like a bully on a bus.

  • red neck girl

Mama June , Honey Boo Boo and jennifer Lawrance- all three brave and unashamed. Nervous, who me?

  • oy

it would be easier if every time she opened her mouth she be careful instead of the public having to run to the internet to get silly jokes and insults

  • guest

Is that so? I didn’t know that millions of viewers had to be tuned in to Jennifer’s (or anyone else) mind to understand the stupid connotations they make when they speak. She is a public figure, she should watch what she says. But that’s what happens when they think they’re in a pedestal & perfect, they think they can say anything without being judged…

  • Lindsey

Love her! Just think if you were a celebrity, you might go saying something like that as a joke and piss some people off unintentionally. Before you go saying she’s arrogant, think about how perfect you would be expected to act if you were a celebrity. She doesn’t care as much, and it’s refreshing!

  • Camille

She said “I beat Meryl”, she never mentioned her last name

  • Brandon

    Well said Cody!!
