Jennifer Lawrence on Being Asked to Gain Weight for Movie: “Hell Yeah!”

(GettyImages.com)

Jennifer Lawrences candor is a refreshing novelty in Hollywood today.

The 22-year-old actress, who has compared her mom to Dina Lohan and called herself “obese” by showbiz standards, is characteristically frank in an interview with the New York Times about her upcoming movie, Silver Linings Playbook.

Lawrence tells the paper that director David O. Russell asked her to gain weight for her role in the film, in which she stars as young, sex-addicted widow alongside Bradley Cooper.

Her response to Russell?

“I was like, ‘Hell yeah!’” she says, noting, “That never happens in a movie.”

Lawrence was less comfortable, however, with the dance number in the movie.

She jokes, “When I dance, I look like I’m a dad at a prom,” adding, “I never grasped my limbs. Ever since puberty I’ve just kind of felt like we don’t understand each other.”

Lawrence, who already has an Oscar nomination under her belt for Winter’s Bone, also talks to the paper about her lack of formal acting training, saying she thinks it actually works in her favor.

She offers, “That’s how I can go about life free as an idiot: because I have no idea what I’m doing.”

Silver Linings Playbook hits theaters on November 21.

What do you think about Lawrence’s self-deprecation and frankness?

It actually does happen all the time and I’m pretty sure the only film she’s been asked to lose weight is Hunger Games which would have made sense for the role. I respect the whole wanna be my own weight thing but I lost the sense when she said she was “obese” by hollywood standards – there are many actresses/actors who are curvier than her who don’t get bothered regarding their weight.

I agree! It seems that the only person that is bothered about her weight is Jennifer herself! I have never heard/read of anyone else talking about her weight and how she’s considered obese by Hollywood standards. She seems to be the only one talking about it. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
I just want someone to say, “Shut up, Jennifer. No one is calling you fat! You look fine.” Her talking about it just reeks of the pretty girl fishing for compilments.

Except lot of people were calling her fat when she got the role of katniss. I read a ton of horrible comments of people calling her fat and obese. I get that for katniss people expected her to be skin and bones, but that doesn’t mean you can call jennifer lawrence fat. The gossip sites and tabloids may not have been calling her fat, but the people commenting on stories about her where.

I never saw that as anyone calling her fat – just saying she wasn’t thin enough to look like she was starving (as this character was supposed to be). To me, that’s a valid criticism of a movie/character not calling an actress fat. Granted, I’m sure I didn’t see every single negative comment that was made in regard to her weight. Similar story, a friend of mine was up for a role in a production of “Rent.” He didn’t get the part because he wasn’t thin enough. He’s not fat by any stretch of the imagination, he just didn’t look like someone who was dying of AIDS.
I’m sure there were individuals that weren’t anyone in Hollywood call her fat – there will always be people who have something negative to say. It just seems that there is no one actually working in Hollywood (directors, producers, other actors, etc.) calling this woman fat. I wish she would stop saying, Hollywood calls her obese – it truly seems no one has. It’s more some moronic viewers saying stupid things.

I agree. Every time I see a post about her somewhere SHE is always bringing up her weight. Saying how someone else is complaining about her weight YET I never see any blogs or media coverage doing so. If anything I see articles bragging about what a good person and actress she is. I read about how much they like her work not her weight. Someone needs to shake the fact that noone is caring about her weight into her head clearly it’s her own self esteem. She is trying to overcompensate by acting like she doesn’t care about her weight when she clearly does. I thought I was the only one.

Why is always complaining about herself? It gets annoying

God I love her!!! So refreshing to see someone like her in tinsel town. Hope she never changes and reaps incredible success along her career.

That’s weird. Ever since she landed the role of Katniss I’ve seen her being labeled fat constantly. They weren’t around when she was Mystique, but as Katniss, definitely. I think even 2 or 3 critics mentioned it after the movie, and even before filming when the casting was announced. It was a pretty common reaction, apart from the rather inane whining about her being “blonde”.

what you see is irrelevant to what i said i see. she was big for katniss
when the role CLEARLY called for a skinny girl thats supposedly to look
like shes starving. watch the films and the movies cause you evidently
dont know the point of the role. idgaf what about your opinion tbh
