Site Regurgitates Wrong “Friends” Movie Rumor

Truth rating: 0

Celebitchy‘s slogan is “escapism can be smart.”

But what the site actually does — lift stories and comment, much like Perez Hilton — is frustrating because it isn’t all that “smart.”

While Hilton’s model is based on “volume” in terms of both quantity and hysterics, which lets him take every story at face value, Celebitchy tries to reason through gossip items, but sometimes misfires badly.

Take, for example, the site’s delayed (and misguided) response to the National Enquirer claim that a Friends film movie is in development with a script being written by Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston.

Gossip Cop read the Enquirer story, saw it for the nonsense it is, and confirmed that a Friends film is not in the works.

Celebitchy saw the same speculation, mulled it over for two days… and somehow or another decided it sounded legit?

“We’ve heard rumors of a Friends movie for years,” begins the site.

But what about these rumors?

“Rumored holdout Jennifer Aniston has made it clear in the past that she’s not on board,” allows Celebitchy, also noting that earlier just last week Cox said, “I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

Nevertheless, Celebitchy seems convinced that it’s a go, that “of course all the actors are on board,” and that, as the Enquirer claims, Aniston and Cox have “hatched a plan” and begun “working on a top secret script.”

Celebitchy reasons that the Enquirer may have picked up on “hints” Cox was dropping when she said, “I don’t know… a lot of things would have to break just right for it to work. But we’ve daydreamed about it.”

Those aren’t hints. That’s Courteney Cox saying there’s no Friends movie in the works.

“They may have insider information,” the site says of the Enquirer story.

No. Trust us. They don’t.

Then Celebitchy really hits the sweet spot: “We heard from the actor who played coffeehouse barista Gunther last September that a movie was already planned and that everyone had signed on.”

Ah, yes, “Gunther.”

Last fall, the actor, James Michael Tyler, supposedly said the major cast members were “keen” to reunite.

Of course, Tyler also said that only he was “definitely on board” to do the film. And when Gossip Cop reached out to reps for Aniston, Cox and Lisa Kudrow, not one of them was aware of any plans.

“Escapism can be smart,” as well as thoughtful.

But Celebitchy only validates a ridiculous report and helps to circulate it.

While you’re at it, Gossip Cop, did you read Celebitchy’s story on John Mayer and Taylor Swift today? Their conclusion is that those two are hooking up, although the word they used I would not post here. How about checking that out for us.

The sad thing about it is that tabs get there stories from bloggers. I once blogged on a site and what I blogged ended up in one of the tabs identical to what I had written. I felt weird. People go around taking people’s blogs and even their graphics, pic, etc. No telling where they might end up.
