Janet Jackson received the first-ever Ultimate Icon: Music Dance Visual Award on Sunday at the BET Awards in Los Angeles. The singer, who recently announced her return to music with a new album and tour set for the fall, was honored at the awards ceremony. In her speech, Jackson said it was a “long journey,” but she was “grateful” to receive the honor. Watch below!

“It’s been a very long journey to this moment,” said Jackson, adding, “My heart is so full. Thank you, God, for making everything, anything possible. I’m so grateful for the support You have always given me.” The singer also thanked her “beautiful” mom and dad, as well as her husband Wissam Al Mana. Jackson continued, “Twenty-five years ago we created ‘Rhythm Nation,’ hoping the world would be a better place but today there is even more to be done.” Then turning her attention to her fans, Jackson said, “I’ve missed you so much, and I love you so much.”

During the tribute, Ciara, Jason Derulo and Tinashe each performed a dance to some of Jackson’s songs like “Rhythm Nation” and “All For You.” Jackson’s appearance at the BET Awards was her first public event since marrying her husband in 2012.

As Gossip Cop reported, Jackson made headlines recently when she announced in May that she was working on a new album, rumored to be titled Conversations In A Cafe. The singer is also gearing up for her “Unbreakable” world tour, which kicks off in Vancouver in August.
