Janay Rice Talks Elevator Assault: “I Did Something Wrong, Too” (VIDEO)
Janay Rice opened up about her relationship with Ray Rice, their domestic violence scandal, and her public apology in an interview with Matt Lauer, which aired on Monday’s “Today Show.” Janay maintained that Ray had never once hit her before the brutal assault that took place in an elevator in Atlantic City, adding that she had done “something wrong” that night, too, when she hit him.
Janay, who sat by her mother Candy Palmer throughout the interview, told Lauer that there had never been an incident of violence in her relationship with Ray before the February assault. As Gossip Cop reported, Ray got into an argument with his then-fiancee in an elevator at the Revel Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, where he punched her in the face, knocked her unconscious, and dragged her out of the elevator.
“Ray knows me. And there’s no way,” said Janay. “He knows what he would have to deal with, you know, if this was something.” She added, “You know, I’m not going to sit there in silence and let something happen to me, and God forbid, in front of my child, just like, let it happen? There’s no way.” After the incident of domestic violence, Janay said she was “furious” and was “done” with the relationship. “We came home and we didn’t talk the entire ride,” she said. “He tried to talk to me. I didn’t want to hear any of it. I just knew he hit me, and I was done. I just didn’t even want to entertain it. Any explanation.”
But Janay had a change of heart, which prompted her to issue an apology in September after video footage of the assault had surfaced. “I was ready to do anything that was going to help the situation,” she explained. “They suggested [I apologize]. [I wanted to] help the way we looked in the media, help his image, help obviously his career, so they told us earlier that week we would do the press conference, and I was fine with it
Janay said the backlash she had received following her apology was “frustrating” for her. “People took it as, you know, I’m making light off of what Ray did,” she said. “In no way. I was basically, not doing what I was told, but at the same time I didn’t think it was completely wrong for me to apologize, because at the end of the day, I got arrested [for assault], too, so I did something wrong, too.” She added, “Not taking any light off of what Ray did because I agree with everybody else. He was wrong.” Check out the entire interview below, and tell us what you think of Janay’s comments. Note: Video no longer available.
