Jamie Foxx: Why I Changed My Name From Eric Bishop (VIDEO)
Jamie Foxx explained why he ditched his real name, Eric Bishop, during an appearance on Friday’s “The Late Show with David Letterman.” After joking that he was forced to make the change because of “warrants” attached to Bishop, Foxx told the story of how, as a young stand-up comedian struggling to get stage time, he decided to use some trickery.
“I had a great set, but I couldn’t get back up for like six weeks, because the comedians ran the list. You sign up on the list. So I go to another place… and I noticed it would be like a thousand guys showed up and only three girls, but the three girls would always get a spot, and they would choose from the list.”
He continued, “So I went to the list and wrote down unisex names. Stacy Green… Tracy Brown… Jamie Foxx! And I’m the first guy called. He goes, ‘Jamie Foxx, is she here?’ I said, ‘No, brother, that’s me.’ And I went on stage and got a standing ovation. That’s how my name changed.” Interesting! At another point in the interview, Foxx tried to convince Letterman to come clubbing with him. Note: Videos no longer available.
