Police: James Holmes Shot 71 People in Total; “The Joker” Report Not Confirmed

(Reuters)

James Holmes, the man suspected of killing 12 people in a senseless shooting spree at a Colorado movie theater showing The Dark Knight Rises on Friday morning, is believed to have acted alone, and authorities are not prepared to comment on his motive.

In their first press conference on the matter, Colorado law enforcement officials said 71 people were shot in total, with some of the 59 injured individuals in critical condition.

There have been widely spread UNCONFIRMED reports that Holmes had painted his hair red and told police he was “The Joker,” referring to the iconic Batman villain.

New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly is said to have revealed “The Joker” details to reporters in his own discussion of the matter earlier Friday.

But Colorado authorities would NOT confirm Kelly’s remarks about a Batman angle to the crime, instead only confirming that Holmes was dressed in all black, with a ballistic helmet and additional protective gear, as well as a gas mask.

He was found with three weapons — an assault rifle, shotgun and handgun — and used at least two devices that released smoke to distract and act as a crowd irritant.

His residence is booby-trapped with additional incendiary devices.

Holmes, a former university student, had no prior record except for a speeding ticket.

    Red hair and body armor.

Yes, exactly like the Joker dressed.

  • Jsavpug

Oh yeah cuz everybody goes to the movies dressed like that with a shotgun. Hello??? Did ANYONE get suspicious at all?!!!

  • Regina1180

I think the reports of the way he was dressed are exaggerated. There were probably other people in costumes too, so he may not have been that out of place. Besides, if he came in while the movie was already playing, he probably went unnoticed.

    This is completely heartbreaking.

  • Jsavpug

No he was not in costume. He was in all black with a gas mask and several guns. What’s even more heartbreaking is that NO ONE saw this coming. May the victims RIP and the gunman struck dead.

  • Krissu

Let’s not place the blame anywhere else but where it belongs – solely with the shooter!

    Hindsight is 20-20!

  • huh?

what the hell is that supposed to mean?

  • Guest9867

The article I read stated that he entered the theatre unarmed, waited for the film to begin, exited through the emergency door (which he propped open), went to his car and retrieved all this weapons/gas mask/vest/etc. and then re-entered the theatre through the emergency exit and then opened fire.

That makes more sense to me. I think someone would have noticed his strange attire and weapons if he just waked in with them to begin with (or I sure hope people would have noticed)

ITA with everything you have mentioned by listening to several news organizations. We will not learn why he did this horrific act until we know more about him. It is a terrible trajedy.

  • Mattmarrero

he came through the ermegency exit, he propped the back door and came in

I just have no words, I will never understand what could posses a person to do something like this. It’s just devastating. I don’t know if they have the death penalty where this happened but he would be a prime candidate for it. Someone like this shouldn’t even be allowed to breath the same air as anyone else. Fact is gun controls have nothing to do with it. Here in Australia we have some of the strictest gun laws and we still have so many criminal acts involving them. If a person wants a gun they will find a way to get it regardless of laws.

I don’t think death penalty is ok for him, it would just release him from all the demons inside him, he needs to be sentenced to life in prison in a secluded cell, with no human contact at all and no posibility for him to take his life….that would make him suffer

  • Vmessing

I wouldn’t be post anything about this man if I was in charge of the news. I would tell everyone we had the person behind it. I feel like he wanted to be tied to Batman forever-and now he is. No reward for the horrible things he did. I would have more about the famlies. I feel so bad for them and may God be with them in this time.

  • Luke

I don’t really believe that. When it comes down to it very few of them want to die themselves. I know If I was a parent of one of the victims I would want him dead. Many people who do horrible things like this are the sort of people who can adapt to life anywhere, so they don’t really care if they are in jail for the rest of their lives. Death penalty does not bring any of the victims back but it does make sure that the person never enjoys another moment on the earth.

May the cat eat him and the cat be eaten by the devil.

So… did he really do it, or did they just find him drugged up and smoking a cigarette next to all the SWAT gear the shooter wore? How long does it take to get all of that stuff off? Witnesses say “a guy” went out of the auditorium to answer his cell phone, but this guy didn’t have orange hair (the Joker’s is green, btw) so was that just coincidence or was a second person involved, like I read someone say there were TWO perps shown in the stick drawings of the plans in the notebook which got mailed to the university.

So many unanswered questions about this case. I really feel for the victims but can’t help feeling that the mainstream media aren’t doing anything to help them get the justice they deserve. Innocent until proven guilty – isn’t that how it works? Just suppose for a moment that James Holmes is innocent. Who else would have the capability to set all this up, and why?

His father’s quite an important man, so I understand. Some leading programmer at a credit rating agency who’s just developed a program which detects financial fraud. Perhaps some journalists out there could actually do some proper good old fashioned journalism and investigate all of these angles because the people in power (i.e. the banksters) are running scared of this guy right now, after the LIBOR scandal and all. Just saying.
