The very first contestant showcased on the series premiere of “Duets” Thursday ended up being the very best – at least, according to the coaches.

J Rome performed “Tonight” with partner Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland, an amazing feat given that he recently had a severe case of tonsillitis that put his voice in jeopardy.

Fellow coach Robin Thicke was amazed, telling the pair, “That’s how you kick off a season of ‘Duets!’”

The other coaches, John Legend and Kelly Clarkson, were apparently impressed, too, giving J Rome the highest rating out of all eight contestants that were featured.
