#iFakeAwards: One Direction Fans Claim iHeartRadio “Best Fan Army” Award Fixed For Justin Bieber
Justin Bieber won the award for Best Fan Army at the 2016 iHeartRadio Music Awards on Sunday, but many fans of the other nominees are convinced the category was fixed. One Direction fans on social media are especially upset, leading “#iFakeAwards” to become a trending topic on Twitter on Monday.
The award for Best Fan Army goes to the artist who has the most dedicated fandom. In addition to Bieber, the nominees included One Direction, Fifth Harmony, 5 Seconds of Summer, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Shawn Mendes, Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande, Little Mix and Demi Lovato. Prior to and during the show, fans could vote on the iHeartRadio website, and according to the leader board shown in the midst of the broadcast, One Direction was in first place and Bieber was fourth as the voting window wound down.
Bieber, however, was among the few nominees to attend the awards show, and went on to surprisingly win the statue despite what the numbers indicated earlier. Directioners, 5SOSFam, Harmonizers and Lovatics have now teamed up on Twitter using the hashtag, “#iFakeAwards,” to protest the result. All are alleging that the category was rigged.
A user named @PUTRAGHES summed up the general fan consensus about the situation by tweeting to Directioners, “We all know that we did everything to win that title, we stayed up all night to vote, we did everything, we voted here on Facebook, Twitter. BUT SOMETHING HAPPENED in the awardings.” The fan went on to argue that since Bieber, and not One Direction, was on hand to accept the award, he was automatically given the title.
Supporters of other artists made similar claims, some even using the hashtag “#iHeartStoleOurAward.” @avak33 posted, “How did the Beliebers win? The only fandoms I saw actually voting was the Directioners, 5SOSFam and Harmonizers! #iHeartRadioStoleOurAward.” None of the actual artists, nor iHeartRadio, has commented on the complaints.
As Gossip Cop reported, Bieber also won Male Artist of the Year at the 2016 iHeartRadio Music Awards. He also performed “Company” and “Love Yourself” early on in the show. And after winning Best Fan Army, the superstar tweeted, “This made me smile. #mybeliebers.” Problem is, other fandoms aren’t smiling at all.
