Idris Elba On James Bond Rumor: “Isn’t 007 Supposed To Be Handsome?”
Idris Elba has responded (with good humor) to rumors that he’s being considered as a future James Bond. “Isn’t 007 supposed to [be] handsome? Glad you think I’ve got a shot! Happy New year people,” tweeted the British actor, along with a funny face selfie picture (see right).
Daniel Craig, of course, currently plays the famed spy, but Elba’s name cropped up in some of the hacked Sony emails as a possible replacement down the line. The actor, perhaps best known in the United States for his role on “The Wire,” happens to be black. Some people, most notably Rush Limbaugh, believe this disqualifies him as a potential Bond.
As Gossip Cop reported, earlier this week Limbaugh took to the airwaves to mock the idea of a black Bond. The radio host explained to listeners, “Here’s the thing, though… James Bond is a fictional character, obviously. James Bond was invented, created by Ian Fleming… and James Bond is… white and Scottish. Period. That is who James Bond is.”
Limbaugh continued, “But now Sony is suggesting that the next James Bond should be Idris Elba, a black Briton rather than a white from Scotland,” continued Limbaugh. “But that’s NOT who James Bond is, and I know it’s racist to probably even point this out… We had 50 years of white Bonds because Bond is white. Bond was never black. Ian Fleming never created a black Brit to play James Bond. The character was always white. He was always Scottish.”
While we’re a long way from any announcement of a new James Bond, Elba has previously indicated that he’d be interested in the role. His funny tweet on Saturday will only continue to fuel conversation. Would you like to see Elba as Bond?
