Idina Menzel “Beaches” Interview On “GMA” (VIDEO)
Idina Menzel appeared on Thursday’s “GMA” to promote this weekend’s Beaches remake. Watch below!
Beaches, a 1988 tearjerker, originally starred Bette Midler and Barbara Hersey as two best friends who see amazing highs and tragic lows over their lives. Lifetime has now spearheaded an updated version, with Menzel in Midler’s role and Nia Long taking over Hersey’s part. The TV film is set to air on Saturday, and Menzel is making a number of media appearances to promote the project.
“We had a great time. I mean, we cried a lot, but we had a great time,” Menzel said of filming with Long. “It’s a beautiful original movie, isn’t it? It’s just the best. I don’t know why I’m doing it. Bette Midler’s my idol. I’m just opening myself up for all the comparisons.”
Midler did give the remake her blessing, though, with an amusing tweet warning her not to tell her the ending. Menzel noted, “Apparently, though, there’s a whole young generation of women that have never seen the movie, so all of a sudden I do worry that I can’t spoil the ending.”
But it’s clear, despite any nerves, that Menzel takes great pride in the movie. “How often is there a piece where it’s about two female roles, just centric, and it’s not about… their romance and everything,” she pointed out. “It’s about them and their friendship. That’s so rare.”
Menzel’s TV tour for Beaches actually began on Wednesday night, with the star tweeting, “Catch me on @colbertlateshow tonight!! And keep up with me tomorrow @GMA @TODAYshow @thechew & @BravoWWHL. #BeachesMovie #IdinaWorldTour.” Check out the “GMA” video below!
