Ice Cube Uses Martin Luther King Jr. Day To Promote ‘Ride Along 2’
Ice Cube used Martin Luther King Jr. Day to promote his new movie Ride Along 2, and his Twitter followers are having mixed reactions to him hyping his comedy via a holiday that commemorates the slain civil rights leader. See his tweet below.
On Monday, Cube tweeted, “Happy Martin Luther the King Day! Martin’s dream was for black & white people to go see #RideAlong2 together. Right?” Among the fans of his tweet was the film’s co-star Kevin Hart, who responded, “I love u for that lol.”
But a fan with the handle @blogdiva wasn’t so amused, writing, “*SIDE-EYE*… [I’ll] let that slide cuz i like you, but do it again & i might have to slap you upside the head.” Another offended follower named @ballstate90 said, “using MLK to try to sell movie tickets? Cmon Cube, you are better than that.” Meanwhile, @lakersfandude tweeted, “I think when MLK envisioned Blacks and Whites ‘Riding Along’ it was regarding to integrated busing.”
Some of Cube’s other followers, however, interpreted the actor and rapper’s comment with sincerity. A fan named @Analyzing tweeted, “For sure. We weren’t allowed in the same theater’s before. Now we can meet up together. On my way today.” A user with the handle @justmeReka wrote, “and that is exactly what my white cousin and I did on Friday!!” And a person named @goddessgentry expressed, “YEP! You’re Crazy. I’m proud of you. Keep doing the damn thang!”
As Gossip Cop reported, Ride Along 2 won the MLK holiday weekend with an estimated $39.5 million at the box office, making it the first movie to knock Star Wars: The Force Awakens from the top spot since its release in mid-December.
