The five-time Grammy nominee took the field to kick off the latest matchup between the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs. At just 25 years old, Hayes is an accomplished musician with three albums that have charted on the Billboard 200, and six singles that reached the Billboard Hot 100. In fact, Billboard named him the leader of country music’s youth revolution in 2014.
Hayes has also received a handful of Grammy nods, including Best New Artist and Best Country Album in 2013, and Best Country Solo Performance in 2013, ’14 and ’15. Additionally, his self-titled debut record hit No. 1 on the U.S. country music charts in 2011, and has sold more than 1.1 million copies. The country star also opened for Taylor Swift in concert that same year, before going on to headline his “Most Wanted” tour.
As Gossip Cop reported, Rachel Platten, country music duo LoCash, and Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy are among other musicians who have performed the “Star-Spangled Banner” during the 2016 World Series games. A few hours before his big performance, Hayes wrote on Instagram, “Getting to sing the National Anthem at the #WorldSeries feels to me like I would imagine a home run feels like to someone who plays baseball! So stoked.”
He went on to share a time-lapse video of his arrival to the stadium, cracking, “You know just the normal, everyday, singing at the #WorldSeries Game 6, routine day…” Check out video of Hayes’ performance of the national anthem at Game Six of the World Series below!
