WATCH: The Hobbit and The Office Mashed Up In Hilarious SNL Video
Martin Freeman combined two of his iconic roles for an incredible “The Office”/The Hobbit mashup on “Saturday Night Live.” The sketch, called “The Office: Middle Earth,” featured Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, post-quest, working at a paper company like Freeman did on the original British version of “The Office.”
But the brilliance didn’t end there. Bobby Moynihan portrayed The Hobbit favorite Gandalf as an office manager prone to cringeworthy jokes, much like Ricky Gervais’ famously insensitive and awkward David Brent character. Taran Killam played a perfect Gollum, set up as Baggins’ office foe like the original “Office” character Gareth. And Kate McKinnon filled the role of receptionist Dawn, here turned into Hobbit elf Tauriel. Other assorted Middle Earthers populate the background of the office.
Some of the sketch’s jokes borrowed directly from “The Office,” including Baggins pranking Gollum by hiding his precious ring inside a jello mold, as well as the Gandalf/Brent hybrid making constant off-color jokes to the delight of no one. For anyone with previous knowledge of “The Office” (or The Hobbit, for that matter), it all works wonderfully. For everyone else, there are dick jokes!
