It’s Official: The Hobbit to Be 3 Movies

Truth rating: 10

(Warner Bros.)

It’s official: The Hobbit will be three movies.

Director Peter Jackson confirmed the news on Monday after hinting at plans to spread the story over a trilogy rather than just the two scheduled releases.

Jackson previously did three Lord of the Rings movies in the Middle Earth world.

The first movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, opens in December.

A second installment called The Hobbit: There and Back Again is set to hit theaters for December 2013.

The “new” third movie is reportedly going to be released in summer 2014, although no official date is set.

Are you excited for a full Hobbit trilogy?

Peter Jackson’s Announcement:

It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie – and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life.  All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.’

We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance.  The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, ”a tale that grew in the telling.”

extending it to two movies was a stretch. Three??? where are they going to put the breaks??? there aren’t any sensible places to put three breaks. They did the entire lord of the rings trilogy in three movies and each of those books was longer than the hobbit…… dumb and clearly designed just to rake in more dollars. Very disappointed.

Sounds kinda stupid if you ask me. It’s only *one* book?

Naturally. They stand to make a lot more money that way. One movie would have been more than sufficient. Two would have been overkill, and three is just plain ridiculous. It also means I’m not interested in hearing any more about it, let alone in seeing any of the three.

Hopefully this will mean a quality well detailed story….and not just more cash for them.

I think it’s ridiculous that they are putting this movie isn’t 3 separate parts!

There’s a big battle at the end of the Hobbit. It takes up 1 or 2 pages of the book as Bilbo is unconscious – now I can’t imagine this taking less than 20-30 minutes in the film. Although it’s 1 book a LOT happens in the Hobbit. in the LOTR trilogy a lot of pages is spent waffling and describing things that are shorter in film so I can easily see the Hobbit being 2 films… maybe 3 with appendices. But I’d still prefer 2x 3hr films not 3x sub 2hour films – especially after the length of the LOTR films (2h50, 2h55, 3h15 – not including the uncut versions!)

The Hobbit is not a trilogy. Once I heard it was going to be two movies, I kind of understood because that is now the trend, but three movies is too much. It would be the same thing as turning LOTR into more than three movies. The Hobbit is shorter than any LOTR books.

Now since they are turning the book into three movies, if the movie is not word for word like the book I will be upset. I don’t think these movies are going to make me very happy. Tolkien in my favorite author, over all I am very disappointed.

They need 3 movies to cover everything in the book. SPOILER WARNING. The first movie is probably the chapters until the get to the bear man’s house. The second one with the elves in the forest and the third one wirh the dragon in the end. Thats atleast what i think they will do.
