As Gossip Cop previously reported, Hilary Swank and Jean-Claude Van Damme were among the stars in Grozny, Chechnya on October 5 to celebrate Chechen Republic president Ramzan Kadyrov’s 35th birthday party.
The problem is that Kadyrov, according to the Human Rights Foundation (HRF), has been “accused of using torture, causing disappearances, and authorizing extrajudicial executions” since taking office in 2007.
Now, the actress, who wished Kadyrov a “Happy Birthday” onstage, is apologizing for her participation.
Swank says she was unaware of Kadyrov’s alleged connection to various human rights violations.
In a statement to the Associated Press, the Oscar-winner wrote, ”I deeply regret attending this event,” adding, “If I had a full understanding of what this event was apparently intended to be, I would never have gone.”
Van Damme has yet to comment about his attendance at the celebration, where he declared, “I love you, Mr. Kadyrov.”
