Hilary Duff Photographed with Cigarette, Says Holding for Friend Was “Bad Idea”

Hilary Duff was spotted with a cigarette over the weekend, leading many outlets to pummel the new mom for picking up a nasty post-pregnancy habit.

The actress was out for the night in Los Angeles — and nowhere near absolutely adorable baby son Luca — when the shot was snapped.

Still, Duff felt the need to address her critics on Twitter.

On Monday, she wrote, “Yikes me holding a cigarette for my friend might have been a bad idea! pretty bummed about the photo.. Sorry guys, looks wors[e] than it is!”

Hopefully that snuffs out the controversy.

    No reason she shouldn’t have. She’s smoked cigarettes in at least one movie I know of, and if she smokes in real life, baby or not, that’s her business and no one else’s–no matter how many do-gooders may scream about it.

    LOL where is the friend? Paps have more pics.. seems more like an attention move.. She changed managers not too long ago & really is trying many different things to draw attention to herself since pregnant & delivery.. this one got attention.. lol

    I say leave her alone! She’s way past the mature adult stage now.. so if she chooses to smoke, let her. She shouldn’t have to apologize on twitter for or to anyone. Maybe the alcohol made her want to try it.. who knows. I believe her though when she says she’s holding it for a friend.. regardless of how she’s holding it. I’ve been one of her biggest fans for 11 years and still going strong.. Nothing or no picture is going to change that.

    So dishonest. Nothing about that picture says ‘holding for a friend.’ It is one thing to be a smoker and another to be a liar. Hell of a thing to be both.

    Seriously, who cares? Out of all the gossip about stars this sort is te worse. Stars doing normal everyday things that are judged because they are famous. The person who wrote this story could smoke, but still wrote this because they hoped it would make them money. That is how desperate tabloid are for stories and when you sit back and think about it, its pretty sad really compared to what else is going on in the world.

    whats the big fuss so what if Hilary smokes most stars do or did at one point smoke either ciggarettes or marijuana it’s not news. academy award winning screen legend Joanne Woodward for example smoked for 46 years from age 14 until age 60 and nobody ever batted an eyelash at that. infact when her and Paul Newman appeared as the secret guests on What’s My Line Anyway in November 1959 she joked about their then nearly 8 month old daughter Eleanor eatting a cigarette the previous day and the audience laughed while if that were now DSS or DCFS would be investivating you for neglecting your child
