“Hidden Figures” Wins Martin Luther King Weekend Box Office

As Gossip Cop reported, it was originally said Rogue One: A Star Wars Story held on to its box office crown last weekend, winning for the fourth time. But the numbers were then revised, with the final figures showing Hidden Figures had actually won the box office, pulling off a last-minute, and meaningful, upset. The film’s stars, who portrayed the real-life, female, African-American NASA scientists who changed the space race, even celebrated the unexpected victory on social media.
Now they have more to celebrate, and on Martin Luther King weekend no less. Hidden Figures took the top spot for the second week in a row with a haul of $20.45 million. La La Land came in second with $14.5 million. Meanwhile, the animated Sing secured third with $13.8 million. Receipts of $13.7 million put Rogue One in the fourth position. Horror film The Bye Bye Man, which opened on Friday the 13th, came in fifth place with a debut of $13.4 million.
Rounding out the Top 10 were Mark Wahlberg’s Patriots Day in sixth, with $12 million, followed by seventh-place finisher Monster Trucks, with $10.5 million. Sleepless nabbed eighth place with $8.5 million, while Underwood: Blood Wars came in ninth with $5.8 million. Just making it into the Top 10 in the last slot was Passengers. The filmed earned $5.6 million.
