Harry Styles: Taylor Swift Relationship Was “Powerful,” But “Didn’t Work Out”
Harry Styles opens up about his relationship with Taylor Swift in a new interview, in which he discusses rumored breakup songs, what he learned from dating the pop star, his message for her today and more.
The One Direction singer is notoriously shy about discussing Swift, who he briefly dated in 2012. When asked about their relationship for his new Rolling Stone cover story, Styles joked, “I gotta pee first… Actually, you can say, ‘He went for a pee and never came back.'” After returning from the restroom, however, the singer agreed to explore the topic.
“Relationships are hard, at any age,” he notes. “And adding in that you don’t really understand exactly how it works when you’re 18, trying to navigate all that stuff didn’t make it easier.” Two of Swift’s songs, “Style” and “Out of the Woods,” are believed to be about her romance with Styles, but he says, “I don’t know if they’re about me or not… but the issue is, she’s so good, they’re bloody everywhere.”
As for if any of his own music was written about Swift, the singer admits, “I write from my experiences; everyone does that. I’m lucky if everything [we went through] helped create those songs. That’s what hits your heart. That’s the stuff that’s hardest to say, and it’s the stuff I talk least about.”
Styles was uncertain about what he’d want to say to Swift today, but eventually offered, “Certain things don’t work out. There’s a lot of things that can be right, and it’s still wrong. In writing songs about stuff like that, I like tipping a hat to the time together.” He adds, “You’re celebrating the fact it was powerful and made you feel something, rather than ‘this didn’t work out, and that’s bad.'” The singer went on to explain that running into Swift or any other ex-girlfriend might be “awkward,” but he’s still grateful they “shared something.” “Meeting someone new, sharing those experiences, it’s the best sh*t ever,” he adds. “So thank you.”
