“Harry Potter” Passes “Star Wars” as Highest Grossing Franchise

Truth rating: 10

(Warner Bros.)

Harry Potter has officially passed Star Wars to become the highest grossing movie franchise in domestic box office history.

The film’s final installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, has been crushing box office records since its release last weekend, earning $214.9 million in only six days.

Altogether, the eight movies have grossed $2.223 billion from releases, beating out Star Wars‘ $2.217 billion total.

The film franchises are currently the only two series to surpass the $2 billion mark.

That’s bull when you put it in perspective!!! Harry Potter had how many movies compared to Star Wars??? Star Wars will ALWAYS RULE!!!

Eight Harry Potter movies and six Star Wars movies with the last three released more then 20 years later. This is still impressive but not a fair comparison.

I agree with Kyle4. I love Harry, but it took Harry 8 movies to pass Star Wars 6 in box office.

Note to article writer: Aren’t there two Pirates of the Caribbean movies that have made over two billion each, making the Pirates series a $2 Billion series?

  • Mel

Yeah, it’s not really that amazing when you put it into perspective. People payed more to see the Harry Potter films so..

This article is bull, the Lord of The Rings trilogy has grossed 2.91 billion with three movies, and it is only in 5th place. (6th after the 4th Pirates finishes.) Although the premise is correct Harry Potter has made more than Star Wars, the numbers are bogus. Plus, LOTR has the highest average of 970 million per movie.
