‘Harry Potter’ Makes Box Office History

In a fitting finale, Harry Potter’s magic is making box office records disappear.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 made $168.6 million in its opening weekend, which was the biggest Friday-Sunday in movie history. The Dark Knight earned $158.4 million in its debut.

The staggering sum comes after Harry made nearly $100 million on its first day, which is just plain ridiculous.

To put the wizardry in perspective, the movie earned roughly eight times what (second place) Transformers: Dark of the Moon – the year’s biggest movie – banked this weekend ($21.2 million).

The comedies Horrible Bosses ($17.5 million) and Zookeeper ($12.5 million) finished in third and fourth places, with $17.5 million and $12.5 million, respectively.

Coming in fifth was Cars 2, which made $8.3 million.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Winnie the Pooh ($8 million), Cameron Diaz‘s Bad Teacher ($5.2 million), Tom Hanks‘ Larry Crowne ($2.8 million), Woody Allen‘s Midnight in Paris ($1.9 million), and Super 8 (1.8 million).

    As much as I love Harry Potter and I’m happy for it (and it’s no surprise it’s doing so well) I think it’s unfair that they compare 3D movies w/non-3D movies in these records. The 3D price is at least a couple bucks more depending on where you live.

    I totally agree. I love this movie. They had most of my fav parts from the book in the movie. I plan on seeing it again at least 2 more times before it leavs the theaters. I want to make sure I didn’t miss anything.

    I’m soooo glad for HP I hope this movie breaks all past records…it really does deserve it it simply is mind blowing! Where all those Twi fans who said HP was a non factor lol

    Anais: Twi fans have been on twitter congratulating HP fans so obviously you prefer to hang around hate sites or you’d know that. Many of us twi fans are HP fans too and I’ve never heard or read anything indicating HP was a “non factor”. Care to share a link for that? I think it’s a real shame you and the media keep trying to make Twilight and HP a competition…both franchises are great and deserve the incredible success each are receiving now. Why can’t you just enjoy the success of HP and be happy it’s making history? What’s the purpose of even bringing Twilight into the discussion? Oh yeah, I forgot…that’s what haters do.

    Nope. I cried five times. It’s an intense movie. There’s lots of emotions in it and people are sad to see it end.

    oh please twilight zombies have always claimed twilight was better was than harry potter for years because they are zombies obsessed with rpatz and kstew…i know exactly what she’s talking about so come off it and no both franchises are not great they don’t even compare you want talent turn to harry potter u want eye candy watch twilight the acting and cinematography are awful in twilight and catherine hardwicke ruined the first movie and when you have a cast that can’t act it only makes it worse no one is hating on twilight as i am too a fan only to look at peter f. aka carlise he is so damn sexy and is the only one there who can act. rpatz and kstew look as if they r bored half the time or constipated harry potter and twilight can’t be compared because there is no competition so get over it twilight zombies i don’t care if twilight were to beat harry potter in number etc or how many mtv they buy themselves harry potter has a better cast that has talent, better production/special effects etc and a better overall quality. harry potter was about courage, and love. twilight is about having a boyfriend as stephen king once said. so suck you mindless twilight zombies and btw KSTEW WILL NEVER WIN AN OSCAR!!!

    Ive already seen it twice! This movie was AMAZING!! I cried at a few times, mostly at Snape’s memories in Godric’s Hallow.
