Gwyneth Paltrow Keeps Her Young Kids On Strict Low-Carb, Gluten-Free Diet

Gwyneth Paltrow keeps her kids on a strict low-carb, gluten-free diet, which she describes in her new cookbook “It’s All Good: Delicious, Easy Recipes That Will Make You Look Good and Feel Great.”

The actress says that she avoids giving her husband Chris Martin and their children — 8-year-old Apple and 6-year-old Moses — the pasta, bread, and rice that are staples in many family kitchens.

In her book, Paltrow writes, “Every single nutritionist, doctor and health-conscious person I have ever come across… seems to concur that (gluten) is tough on the system and many of us are at best intolerant of it and at worst allergic to it.”

The regimen is not always so easy on the children.

“Sometimes when my family is not eating pasta, bread or processed grains like white rice, we’re left with that specific hunger that comes with avoiding carbs,” reveals Paltrow.

The low-carb diet Paltrow espouses in “It’s All Good” has provoked a split reaction among nutritionists and commentators.

Some feel that Paltrow is setting a health-conscious example, while others believe that the diet Paltrow imposes on her children is too severe.

Hey they’re still getting the nutrition they need (if not more)

  • dannehlicious

I think that’s fine, I wish that would actually happen in my house. My mom always makes pasta and rice and I need to constantly make separate, more healthy meals.

  • golddigger99

WTF do they eat then??? lol! I’m not overweight or obese by any means, but bread and pastas is ALL I EAT!!! I guess I’m just part of the generation that grew up eating hotdogs, pizza, and hamburgers.

  • MissZee

But say that kids have a tournament the next day, pasta is good for the body

  • Celiac Patient

Dude, this is insane. Gluten is a protein that, when given in moderation, is not bad for the body. If you have Celiac disease, like I do, then it’s awful for the body. Gluten intolerances make gluten bad for the body, too. Also, carbs keep the body moving. Children shouldn’t be overloaded on carbs, of course, but moderation makes them okay. This woman is insane, and her children are probably on supplements and are hungry a lot.

  • Jean

She’s damn right. Once I eliminated those from my diet, I felt sooo much better and finally started losing weight.

  • Kateekidding

Uhm carbs does not ‘keep the body moving’ fiber does.

A lot of people don’t tolerate gluten very well, even without having celiac disease. When suffering from irritable bowel syndrome gluten is the first thing you remove to look for improvement and it is also removed in cases of autism with very good results. Furthermore Gluten can also be removed from the diet as part of a treatment for epilepsy.

Removing gluten from the diet even without these diseases might not be a bad idea at all.

To call Gwyneth ‘insane’ on the basis of her not feeding her children food with gluten shows just how little you really know on the matter.

Also, to deduct that the children probably are on supplements is just weird. How many nutrients does the different kinds of grains have, that you would otherwise have to turn to supplements to get? Oh yeah, none.

  • Kateekidding

Sure, but oats, could be just as good for the body (if not even better).

Personally I think it is irresponsible of a parent, to put such strict restrictions on foods. Yes moderation is the key, but putting food into good and bad category is a recipe for disaster. If these Children really do have the intolerance that she is claiming then yes I completely understand her method. However so many people self diagnose themselves with intolerance’s when in reality many tests need to be done in order to find out if a person really has an intolerance. I find it very hard to believe that every member of her family has all the exact same intolerance’s. All this looks like is Gwyneth, passing her own food ideas and worries on to her children and that is wrong. She is setting up her children for problems in the future. Children need to be children they should not be worrying about being thin (which is what I think this is really about). If her children are walking around with any kind of hunger then she is depriving them of nutrients, the body does not crave something that it does not need. Every food craving comes from something. When it comes down to it we have all just switched of our hunger signals and no one is listening to their bodies anymore. Of course some foods have a better nutritional value but there is no such thing as a good and bad food, there is just food

Its good that she’s keeping her children healthy, but c’mon every child wants a happy meal somtimes.

  • Jojojet

I think it visit good that she is teaching them about nutrition from an early age. When they are older they can choose what to eat. I feel like she has taken her children to a nutritionist to be sure that this is the right way to go.

When the end of days of days come, and we are all fighting over a loaf of bread, I’ll be able to beat the crap out of all you vegan and gluten free dumb people because I’ve been eating from all the food groups (a well balanced diet) and not this orthorexia bullcrap! And no, I am not overweight. I am healthy. I workout out 6 days a week, eat animal protein, dairy, grains, and sometimes pasta bread and rice! What the hell is wrong with these Hollywood people? And I’m guessing that the demise of Chris Martin’s musical genius began to fade around the time he met this neurotic straving actress and conformed to this ridiculous diet trend, after “Rush of Cold Blood to the Head”. What a waste! Those kids don’t have a chance. But my carb eating kid will excel!!!

If she wants to eat that way who cares??? As for her kids, I would bet they’re eating things she doesn’t know about.

Actually carbs “do keep the body moving” because carbs are the body’s first choice for fuel and to provide energy…….yeah even to not digest all that wonderful fiber and remove it from the boddy you need carbs to provide the energy to contract the muscles in the colon. If there are no carbs or insufficient amount of carbs the body breaksdown whatever fat it has stored and once all the fat is gone then the next source of fuel is protein which comes from the muscle. I can understand not giving them heaps of processed sugar and carbs but not cut it out so drastically and if they are having hunger cravings for carbs thats the body’s way of telling them it needs carbs. Besides her children are at a critical stage of growth where their bodies need all of the energy it can get to facilitate the proper growth and changes necessary to reach adulthood. This “diet” is fine for her and Chris as they have reached maturity but not for kids especially when they hit puberty with the addition of hormones and if they participate in any sports she doing a great disservice to them. I hope she actually took them to a doctor or nutrionist before changing their diet.

I understood the statement ‘keep the body moving’ as keeping the bowels moving. Fiber really is the main factor there, not carbs.
And as to fueling the body.. the body does not care if it is fed carbs, fat or protein, when it comes to body-functions. it all has energy, and that’s what matters the most. Fat even more so than the two other groups. Carbs are however the most accessible source of energy to the body and is absorbed the fastest.
Even if you ate no carbs at all your bowels shouldn’t have problems getting their muscle-tissue to function as long as you get enough calories -and fiber in your diet.
It is however true that a NO carb diet could become difficult, if not impossible, to eat healthily because that would mean you would have to live on protein and fat alone, which would have complications that could damage the liver, kidneys and of course the arteries (however not the bowels tissue or muscle tissue in general). The body does not ‘eat’ it’s own muscle tissue if it gets enough energy from the diet. I don’t see why that should become a problem with a LOW carb diet. There are loads of carbs that does not contain gluten fx fruits, potatoes and even some corn sorts.
I am frankly more concerned by the children not eating dairy than them not eating gluten.but that can be fixed by taking supplements. I am quite sure that she has seen nutritionists, as there is stated in the article. If not, that would be an oversight indeed. Many children does however thrive on a low carb/glutenfree diet, I don’t see why hers shouldn’t.
