Gwen Stefani On ‘Howard Stern’: God Put Blake Shelton And I Together (AUDIO)
“I didn’t know what I was going to do,” Stefani told the radio host about her split from ex-husband Gavin Rossdale in early 2015. “I was in a panic. I was in hell.” After 20 years together, the relationship ended when the rocker allegedly cheated on Stefani with their children’s nanny. “I was going back to ‘The Voice’ in the middle of it with this huge big secret,” the former No Doubt singer divulged.
Stern then joked that amid the drama, “Blake, that devil, he worked his way in there. He’s awesome.” But an amused Stefani insisted, “It wasn’t like that at all.” The singer further revealed that despite working alongside the country star for two seasons on the singing competition show, she really “didn’t know Blake.” Stefani explained, “In the show, how it works, is I’m in hair and makeup for about 400 hours and we all have separate trailers… Nobody goes into each other’s room and nobody talks to each other.”
Stefani further noted that she was busy with “a brand new baby” when she first joined as a coach on “The Voice” in 2014, and only talked to Shelton “in front of the cameras.” “I did not know him, but you get to know him on the set because he’s so funny and he’s so lovely,” she added. The singer then went on to reveal that in the summer of 2015, Shelton pulled the coaches and producers aside to “make the announcement” that he and Miranda Lambert were getting divorced.
Having been going through a secret breakup at the same time that Shelton made his revelation, Stefani admitted, “I think I might have went white and into shock. It felt like he was exposing me… I couldn’t even get my head around it.” The singer then divulged that one day during filming, “He came up to my chair. It was the first time he had ever walked to my chair… I never saw him look so upset. He basically told me everything that was going on with him.”
Following that intimate conversation, Stefani and Shelton became each other’s support system. “We started this friendship which was unbelievable that God would put us in a position to have each other at that moment,” she said. “I wasn’t trying to start a relationship, I was just trying to not die. There was no plan.” Listen below to a highlight from Stefani’s “Howard Stern” interview!
