Gravity, the visually wondrous space drama starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, opened to $55.5 million at the box office, surpassing early estimates.

That made the Oscar contender the biggest non-sequel October debut ever.

In second place was Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.

The animated family film took in $21.5 million.

Runner Runner, with Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck, opened in the #3 spot with $7.9 million.

Two holdovers — Prisoners ($5.7 mllion) and Rush ($4.5 million) — came in forth and fifth, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 were: Baggage Claim ($4.5 million), Don Jon ($4.2 million), Insidious: Chapter 2 ($3.7), Pulling Strings ($2.7), and Enough Said ($2.1 million).
