John Legend and Cynthia Erivo performed during the In Memoriam at the 2017 Grammys on Sunday. Watch below.
The Recording Academy announced in January that Legend would be one of the performers at the 59th annual Grammy Awards. Last week, the award show’s producer, Ken Ehrlich, revealed Legend would be joined by Erivo to pay tribute to the artists lost over the last year. Ehrlich specifically arranged a slower version of the Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows” for the performance.
“I heard that song [now] in the context of loss — not lost love, but in the context of, ‘what would I be without you, someone who’s gone?'” he told the Associated Press. “And I played it again, and then I played it again. And then when I wiped away the tear — which seriously I had — I said, ‘This is what we need to do this year. This is the song.'”
Ehrlich also said roughly 50 people would be recognized in the annual montage, narrowed down from a list of more than 500. The segment ended up including Leonard Cohen, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, John Wetton, Sharon Jones, Merle Haggard, Joey Feek, Bobby Vee, Butch Trucks, Juan Gabriel, Debbie Reynolds, Guy Clark, Pete Fountain, Frank Sinatra Jr, Phife Dawg, Muhammad Ali, Leon Russell, George Martin and more.
