Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon + More Dazzle At Governors Awards (PICS)
The 2014 Governors Awards took place in Hollywood on Saturday. The event celebrated the very first Academy Awards winners of the season, with honorary Oscars this year going to Harry Belafonte, Maureen O’Hara, director and animator Hayao Miyazaki, and screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere.
Belafonte received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which, as Gossip Cop reported at the time, went to Angelina Jolie last year. The legendary actor was honored here not for his film work, but his dedication to social justice. “To be rewarded by my peers for my work for human rights, civil rights and for peace… It powerfully mutes the enemy’s thunder,” said Belafonte. The star expressed hope that message-focused films will have a long-lasting impact, saying, “Maybe, just maybe, it could be civilization’s game-changer.”
Oscar hopefuls in attendance included Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carrell, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Jake Gyllenhaal. Preview winners such as Reese Witherspoon (also a potential contender again), Octavia Spencer, Hilary Swank and Christoph Waltz also came out. Other familiar faces included Chris Rock, Clint Eastwood, Susan Sarandon, and Liam Neeson. The formal evening also served as date night for some A-list couples, like Aniston and Justin Theroux, as well as John Krasinski and Emily Blunt. Mark Wahlberg not only brought his wife Rhea, but also their daughter. Robert Downey Jr., however, appeared solo, as wife Susan just gave birth to their second child last week.
