Gotye Slams Glee Cover: “It Was Ultra Dry”

Truth rating: 8

The verdict is in: Gotye was not happy with the recent “Glee” cover of his hit song “Somebody That I Used to know.”

The Australian singer reportedly said the rendition, which featured series regular Darren Criss and guest star Matt Bomer performing the song, was “ultra dry.”

“They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals, but the vocals were that pop ‘Glee’ style, ultra dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense,” Gotye told the Sunday Mail.

The musician, whose real name is Wally de Backer, went on to say the track sounded “like it’s playing to you from a cardboard box.”

Gotye is hardly the first musician to diss the show.

The Foo FightersDave Grohl and members of Kings of Leon have also made it known they aren’t fans of the FOX show.

Check out the clip below, and tell us if you agree with Gotye’s criticism.

So he knows the show has a “style”, yet he gave the ok for them to use the song anyway? Sounds to me like he did it just so he could complain.

And to be honest, I never heard the song before Glee.

He has a right to have an opinion but those two put much time into singing that song. Im sure it doesnt feel good to have the original artist come out and tell the world he thought it was “dry”….

  • Spanishaccent

I don’t care what gotye had to say about. I personally liked Matt Bomer singing it more than Gotye

  • Lindsey

I totally agree with him on this. I don’t like glee, and the creator is an arrogant dick.

  • Guest

Maybe they’ll finally stop giving ALL the songs to Darren. Sick of the Blaine show.

  • Beba892007

This song was not “dry” I think it was amazing the way they did it…

I could NOT agree more with you. Gotye’s voice doesn’t sound as good as Matt’s in my honest opinion.

  • Tuskawilla57

I liked it better than the original…sorry Gotye… you sound kind of … bitter…you should be thanking Glee for boosting your sales!!

  • adoll

I LOVE the Glee cover way more than his original! Way better voices!

  • Pixie

Personally, I loved the original. I heard it once it went viral and while I wasn’t a huge fan of Goyte’s voice at first, it has become one of my favorites. That said, I didn’t hate Glee’s cover. The voices aren’t bad, but I can understand where Gotye is coming from. They didn’t have the emotion like he did and it did sound a little ‘dry’. I think they definitely could have improved.

  • lori

Glee provided a whole new audience for Gotye and he should thankful instead of saying something ugly about it. I had never heard of him before I saw the song on the show. I may have to rethink being a fan. I don’t like rude people and prefer not to support them.

  • Guest

I thought it was a beautiful cover and now that he’s being such a jerk, I’m starting to think it was better than the original. You’re welcome for the extra attention, dumbass.

  • Lela Kuiper

i don’t watch Glee, but i happened to catch this performance as i was waiting for another show to come on, and i thought they did a great job

  • http://twitter.com/HayleyPearson92 Hayley C. Pearson

I love the Glee version, I think it was much better than the original.

  • Anonymous

How big of a music fan are you? (serious question) The song was #1 in 18 countries and has literally been everywhere for the past couple of months.

  • Sheelly

It was already a HUGE hit before Glee and Ryan Murphy (aka biggest ego ever) got their hands on it.

  • Sheelly

Apparently, Regine1180 was under the same rock as all the other lame Glee fans out there who have no appreciation for music. So much of that song’s beauty is the pain that you hear in both Gotye’s and Kimbra’s vocals. The Criss and Bomer perform it without that certain bite of emotion.

  • Vortextempest

HATE that song, the original. dont care to hear the cover

  • http://www.facebook.com/daniellesylvie Sylv Taylor

The problem is that the song is so suited to Gotye’s voice that it doesn’t quite suit these two. Some parts, they’ve got it (especially when they harmonise); others, they sound like weak karaoke. I can see what he means, even if he didn’t articulate it the way people wanted him to.

Maybe if they’d had a few more weeks to practice it. It’s a deceptively tough song to nail, in my opinion, because the musical arrangement is so spare.

  • Anonymous

the song on glee was really bad. it just doesn’t suite voices of performers. but anyways all perfomances on glee sounds pretty dry and always the same.

  • Satine

I love Gotye’s version, I don’t mind the Glee version, but I prefer Gotye’s version better and perhaps that is because of Kimbra. It is his song if he does not like it, he has a right to say so. I find it amusing how people are on his case but they have no problem slamming others for expressing their opinion.

  • D. Martin

@Kyle & Sheelly – in defense of Regina1180 — I had never heard the song before hearing it on GLEE either. When I heard it I looked it up on YouTube and found the video. I have since downloaded the song on iTunes. Gotye may not like the finished product on GLEE — its his song and that’s his opinion — but GLEE does introduce new music to the people who might not hear it otherwise.

  • D. Martin

I agree. It’s what made me look up the song in the first place. I found Gotye’s video on YouTube and thought it was good. But I like this version as well.

  • Regina1180

I don’t listen to the radio as much a I used to because they play the same 12 songs on repeat all day long. I usually have satellite on in my car during my commute and I can still say I never heard it until after Glee. The same thing with We Are Young by fun. I dont think you can turn in the radio and not hear either one now.

  • Sazzy

I like Walk of the Earth’s version the best! After I heard that any other version even the original does not match up to 5 people the ONE guitar!

  • Kb1983

You’re rethinking be a ‘fan’?? You’re saying you’re a Gotye fan after one song?

One song and you’re a fan? But you’re rethinking that after he gave his opinion and it differs to your’s. Wow. You’re clearly a very loyal person. Can you be my most trusted confidante?

What are you smoking and can I have some?

  • Kmarie

As someone go has followed Gotye’s career for years, some of these comments make me laugh. Jealousy is a curse, people. At least he has got you talking about him…

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/CFW5MYCJYSEJVE2FHHQWIIWSII Haya

It does sound weird compared to the original, but… I love Darren Criss’ voice so much, I could marry it if possible. >.<

  • really

So this video was watched over 8 million 6 hundred thousand times. Pretty sure that people like Matt Bomer and Darren Criss singing this song!

  • Rose

Whatever. I had never heard of him until that cover on Glee so he should thank his lucky stars that now more people know who he is.

  • Rose

Oh and by the way. I don’t know who he is because the only thing I listen to is classic rock because in not a fan of the crap that’s out there right now. I find out about half these new songs by hearing them on glee and the searching for the original artist. If it weren’t for glee I wouldn’t know what was going on past David Bowie.

  • Kdavis02

Maybe there’s not enough emotion because Glee turned it into a song about brothers as opposed to a breakup song. Regardless, Gotye sounds strained when singing this live (clearly it is tuned on his track) and Criss and Bomer sing it in a lower key. I find myself playing the Glee version more than Gotye’s. On vocal quality alone.

  • Sadiedog_125

Oh man it is just a song he gave permisson for the glee to beable to sing it so they did so what I like both versions they both have something special about it but people just don’t understand that with the people who sing which ever song has different meanings to them the original was about a break up while the glee version was about brothers who are basically like strangers now to each other.

  • Mic

I actually preferred the Glee version, although there was not much of a difference between the original.

  • Bcournoyer

I loved this song when I first heard it but actually prefer Glees version! It’s just a matter of taste.

  • Anonymous

oh come on, all glee songs are autotuned

  • alessia

I love it…i’m so sad. My lovelly Matt sang that song and we’ were all happy about how it ended up…ç_ç

  • Jennifer

I’m with Kyle4. How big a music fan are you? And what rock have you been hiding under? As for why he said yes, probably on advice of a manager without fully realizing what he was letting himself in for. Regretting it a bit now. It WAS a very lacklustre performance on the part of the Glee folks, but probably satisfied like Twinkies to all the teenybopper viewers.

There are some songs performers should NEVAAAAR attempt, no matter how good they are vocally. Gotye’s “Somebody that I used to know” is one of those. The only cover I’ve ever heard of it that comes close to doing it justice is the one by Walk Off The Earth. Another artist is Adele. It seems lately all the talent show contestants on The Voice, X Factor, American Idol, etc., seem compelled to try on one of Adele’s songs. DON’T!!! The inevitable comparisons come up and DO NOT reflect well on the copying artist. Two in particular that irritate the crap out of me are “Rolling in the Deep” and “Set Fire to the Rain”. Adele has a particular tone and quality in her voice, especially when she hits certain notes that are the “money notes” and no one can duplicate them. Hearing other people try to get there and fail ruins it for me.

  • Anonymous

I bet Glee thought they were rocking that song.

  • Loripinkleton

I’m surprised nobody mentioned the duet performed on American Idol by Elise & Phillip just one day later…they did an amazing rendition! I am a Glee fan, but Elise & Phillip’s version is the best, especially the video which shows their chemistry! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLKvAfKfe2A&feature=youtube_gdata_player

  • Leigh

Not a huge Glee fan. Watched the episode just to see Matt Bomer sing. IMO, those kind of comments from Gotye are pretty classless to me. Sounds a bit like jealousy. He didn’t have to think it was great, but one thing it did do is get his song more recognition and both stars showed nothing but appreciation for the song. Show an appreciation of that if nothing else, and leave the tacky comments to little teens. As far as Matt & Darren’s performance, I enjoyed it on Glee, but have you heard the A cappela version? I loved that version on YT even more. They didn’t really need any enhancements, but alas that is Glee’s way.

  • Deb

Personally, I never heard of Goyte or his song until it was done on Glee. The only reason I watched then was because of Matt Bomer. I was impressed with the song and the way they sang it. I was also interested in finding out more about Goyte. Not aymore! His petty and classless remarks tell me all I need to know.

  • Deb

Personally, I never heard of Gotye or his song until Glee. The only reason I watched then was because of Matt Bomer. I really liked the song and the way they performed it. It made me interested in finding out more about Gotye. Not anymore! His petty and classless remarks tell me all I need to know.

  • Georgia

It is Gotye’s song, he can say whatever he wants, and he is right it did sound dry.

  • Shaggy

I have never heard before Glee so it may NOT be as mainstream as you say. But I did like the original version when I heard it. He should be thanking Glee.

  • Ashley Price

If you want to hear a good version of Somebody That I Used To Know, look up Walk Off The Earth’s version. They have 5 people performing on one guitar at the same time and it is pretty epic. Just thought I should share :)

  • well no shit

    well i’m sure it doesn’t feel good to listen to people do shitty covers of a song he worked on either C;

  • vanessa

gotye, you’re ugly as F#$% and they did a better job! they sang YOUR song better than you did!

  • Patttielicious

I agree…. Matt bomer is FINE!!! and he can sing better than gotye… Gotye’s just hating…
