Gossip Cop on Kristen Stewart and the Media

And now a few words on Kristen Stewart.

Entertainment Weekly had the opportunity to speak with Stewart (and Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner) in Vancouver before “Eclipse” wrapped. As everyone now knows, during the conversation Stewart “got nicely fired up” about constant questions concerning the nature of her relationship with Pattinson.

“I probably would’ve answered it if people hadn’t made such a big deal about it,” Stewart told the magazine, going on to point out that people seem to assume that the choice to become an actor erases one’s right to privacy. Then Stewart gave the comments headlined around the world, “There’s no answer that’s not going to tip you one way or the other. Think about every hypothetical situation: ‘Okay, we are. We aren’t. I’m a lesbian.’ I’m just trying to keep something.”

Smart and media savvy, Stewart knew which word would rock the blogosphere.

And it did.

While it’s surprising that the majority of outlets actually took the time to read two paragraphs and understand the comments’ context, the fact that these same outlets used Stewart’s plea to leave her personal life alone as just another opportunity to keep it in the news cycle is all too predictable.

Of course blogs are going to run with the “lesbian” headline. Few words will grab more eyes. If those eyes happen to read enough of the article to understand Stewart was joking, great. If not – well, they don’t care. They got you to click.

We understand why the media does what it does. Phenomena like “Twilight” and celebrities like the series’ stars are huge moneymakers for the gossip biz. That’s why an entertainment-focused publication like EW raises the “who’s dating whom???” question in the first place, acting, as one of its own commenters pointed out, more like Tiger Beat. And many fans – not all, but MANY – want very intimate details about those stars’ personal lives. If there were not millions of fans who DID care about Stewart’s relationships, the tabloids and the sites Gossip Cop monitors would have no incentive to badger her.

But it doesn’t make it right for them to do so. It just doesn’t.

What Gossip Cop wants, and what we think nearly all of our readers want (judging by your comments and e-mails) is not just honesty in reporting, but also civility and respect.

We don’t think that’s preachy. We think it’s journalism.

We’ve seen the paparazzi’s destructive behavior with Pattinson, Stewart, and dozens of other young celebrities. We’ve seen the relationship between stars and the people who cover them deteriorate. We see increasingly antagonistic bloggers turning otherwise charismatic actors and actresses into pin cushions less willing to open up when it is appropriate and when they do feel comfortable.

And when someone like Stewart speaks out like she did, sites miss the point and keep stoking speculation.

Stewart hinted at as much in the interview. “I’m not going to give the fiending an answer,” she explains.

Her private life – like Pattinson’s, like Lautner’s, like everyone’s – is private. The celebrities who let fans get a glimpse of their lives are the ones who do so willingly and happily. They are not browbeaten or blackmailed into it.

The outlets that circle Stewart like wolves and pounce at every movement bear an unflattering similarity to Bella’s foes.

I think you are 100% right. The whole thing is getting out of control. I’m past ready for a little journalism 101. You guys are doing a great service though. Thanks!

  • dancer1 says:

Keep up the good work Gossip Cop. You are a true journalistic entity in the world of entertainment. Keep reporting the facts, maintaining integrity and you’ll definitely be known to be the sole voice of reason in the gossip entertainment world. Thanks for the info.

I am glad there is a Gossip Cop, because freedom of speech is getting out of hand! It is being abused more than used the way it’s supposed to be! I heart Kristen Stewart and I felt her frustration! Sometimes you gotta risk being called a bitch for people to finally back off! Everybody has something they want to be just for them and I understand completely! Keep it safe Kristen!

  • dancing says:

she’s the one that said she was gay, not us remember that gossipcop.

  • usme says:

Kristen did not say she was gay! She was saying what everyone else was contemplating in the tabloids and on the internet if it ain’t this then it must be that! Anyone with reading comprehension could understand what she meant!

  • SavvyAussie says:

Thanks GossipCop, if it weren’t for you guys I’d go crazy from all the BS out there. Everyone is entitled to privacy, celebrity or not.

  • stelange says:

yeah right. kris is gay when she had a boyfriend (mike angarano, now rob). my male friends are ogling about her especially those legs. can’t you see, she always have guys around her. maybe it was not reported because all we hear about was twifans’ obsession of rob. there are male population are silently admiring this girl who you fondly called gay.

  • bailey says:

I think its so refreshing to have a entertainment website out there, that actually not only cares about the truth surrounding celebrities but also cares about those readers who want nothing but honesty from these journalists. Keep up the good work, im proud of the work that you guys are doing…especially regarding this chicky here (Kristen). Who like this website is a breath of fresh air. Not only do we get a chick who follows her own rules and doesn’t stick to the ideology that girls should act and behave like rich stuck up chicks but you also get a website (you guys) that leads the way in reporting the truth and with that your credibility has risen dramatically with me. I only found out about you guys because other websites were mentioning you, so i became curious.
Good luck with everything and you can bet your bottom dollar that i’ll be coming to you guys for the truth.
    RESPECT!!

  • KateWinterman says:

I think that GC fell into the extact same pattern when it tried to invalidate the statements made by RP about the nature of their relationship.

  • crmomof2 says:

Kristen did not say that she was gay. She said that websites, OK! and other tabloids are constantly speculating that they are, they aren’t and that she is a lesbian. She did not admit to anything. She basically stated that her private life was off limits. She didn’t confirm or deny her relationship with RPATZ. She said that there was no way that she could answer that question. Let’s face if she said that there wasn’t a relationship there would be a group of people who would be going crazy with news, if she confirmed the relationship her and Pattison’s life would be under a more powerful microscope that it’s been already, so it’s best not answer it at all.

It’s a shame because she is a talented young woman, and we all should be concentrating on that. She is not the only celebrity that has this problem and hasn’t been the only one to set limits on what she wants to give up or not. Kudos to her for standing up for herself.

It’s funny how some “news” outlets focused on what they thought would bring them sales and not the truth.

I have to admit, i didn’t used to be a big KStew fan, but now I just love her. Her honesty is SO refreshing (although I could do without the repeated F Bombs, but I digress). It seems to me that her and Rob are finally in that Zen place where they can live their lives and not let the press get to them so much. I’m SO glad because they deserve it.

    Michelle

  • Suefromnc says:

Thank you Gossip Cop for providing us all with the true story surrounding the Twilight Stars. I have a lot of respect for KStew, she seems really old for her young age. So good for her, for not sharing every single aspect of her life!

I think Taylor seems to be handing this all very well.

I am just so happy I found this site, it’s where I turn when I want the truth! Keep up the good work.
    Thanks

    *peeks in*

OK, I have to say that I saw this one coming… When kristen said those words she was totally relaxed with the subject (ie, not reacting to their pressure), so that is what made them post that she said she’s a lesbian… Really smart of Kristen when she added the lesbian thing! (no, no sarcasm) :D … if she hadn’t added that bit, but just said the “we are, we aren’t”, sure thing some tabloids would have used the “we are”, while some others would have used the “we aren’t” on their headlines… she’s definitely really wise with media! :D Me loves her! See, now who’s playing with your minds tabloids? *clapping Kristen*

I’ve said it some times, and we’re on the same page GC, it’s just a sick attempt of getting hits on their stupid sites! but let’s face it… what else could we expect from such losers! Some cannot even actually report, and have to lie in order to justify their salary… or calm their boozy-bosses… it’s just sad… feel like pitying them… but not even! LOL

It’s on human nature to want to know what is hidden… biologically, it is on the core of what being a human means… the difference is that some people are just aware of what the word “respect” means, and others not…
There’s a difference tho… wanting to know about your favorite artist in order to get to know him/her better, and probably admire him/her more, because again, they all end up being humans with virtues and defaults… that is totally different from digging into someone’s life because yours is so empty that you have to make it a sad mirror of your ambitions and wish you were living someone else’s affair…

There will always be some artist idolized… for whichever the reason is, they will be idolized and people will want to know about them… some would want to know too much, some others just enough… it’s something that comes along with the “being an actor/actress” thing, like it or not… it’s up to how you manage it what makes the difference… and Kristen found the equilibrium point!

Yesterday I read an interview… lemme get the link…
    http://www.collider.com/2009/11/06/kristen-stewart-interview-the-twilight-saga-new-moon/
There! I’m gladly surprised with Kristen answers! I was smiling while reading… :D She’s handling media SO SO SO well! I admire her now so much more than I did before… first the “Interview” interview, and now this one… pfffffffttttt! Such a mature lady for being just 19! Goodbye the “Stop-bugging-me” moments… and welcome the “I’ll-classy-evade-the-question-while-facing-it” times! :D Clever girl!
It’s like… no one tells you what you should or shouldn’t say… you just find it out… and when you do, you get relaxed, comfortable, and confident as kristen seems to be now…

Thank you so much for your hard work GossipCop… :D I really really appreciate it! I’m convinced with you getting in the picture, this will get back to be “entertainment” world and not just awful lies… Everyone will get back to appreciate this world, without the fear of being used like a puppet by the tabloids…
THANK YOU seems not enough… ;)
    *THUMBS UUUUUUUUUP* :D

PS, sorry for the rant… lol

Gossip Cop, you are fantastic. I have been following you for awhile now and I have a fond respect for your journalism. Not only do you tell the truth, but you search for it, and you don’t stop searching until it is found. If you have not found the truth of the matter, you tell us that you are still searching; you don’t print just anything to keep your readers following. NOW that is journalism, which is also Gossip Cop. Thanks for all the hard work you do to give us the truth.
The story with Kristen is amazing. Kristen is so strong. I hope she will be able to keep your wits about her through the whole Twilight Saga. There is still another two years to go.
I do admire Kristen and Robert’s interviews. They give honesty, and truth in their interviews. The interviews they are giving are suppose to be about the movie or movies they had made, not about their personal lives. If the interview was about their personal live, wouldn’t it be called a biography.

  • realrobstennews says:

i love this sight i check it all the time!!!! its real stuff they dont lie like the magz!!! i respect kristen so much i really think that people should leave her love life alone yeah we are all dieing to know whats going on but cant she have some privacy!!!? kristen is a great actress shes great at what she does and she loves it i repsect her choices not to voice her personal life shes right not to! robsten maybe a happening may not be whatev but this site knows what its talking about they arent affraid to post the truth! the tabliods just want ratings and thats it they dont care about the celebs when they should, kristens normal robs normal taylor is normal, they sont deserve the shit that these magz post, then the crap they get afterwards i mean wtf! i mean cant they think just a little i mean what if that was them would they like it? i love rob and kris they always seem happy together and that is so amazing for them i hope they are happy with eacother and their fellow actors and actress friends cuz they all seem so great!!

  • bwen says:

I am so sick of the sites that continual hammer out every little detail about Rob and Kristen, enough is enough, their private lives should be exactly that private!!!!
Thank you for being a voice of reason in a world gone mad!!!!!
I admire Rob and Kristen immensely, I can’t believe that they have remained so strong and confident while living in a fish bowl. I love how they stick to their guns about what is appropriate for discussion in an interview and what is not. Kristen is a feisty young lady good for her!!!
Would I like to see them together…. sure who doesn’t like a hot romance, and these two are definitely hot!!! But I don’t want details, and I most certainly don’t want to hear about what they had for breakfast or every time they break wind.
I cannot believe the number of fans out there that buy into the crap that is printed about Rob and Kristen, are they mindless auto-mats, I feel like telling them they can look at the pretty pictures but don’t read the BS you’ll get cancer.(LOL)
Anyway you are great at what you do, I believe it used to be called upholding journalistic integrity!

  • kit says:

Oh, puhleeese. You’re just a permutation of any other gossip site, except you print what the star’s reps want. That can be good (when it’s true) or bad, when it’s false or deliberately misleading. But you ARE trading in on star’s fame. You follow the most famous more closely. Like the other tabloids and gossip sites. Please stop with the whinging and sobbing “Please just leave Kristen and Rob alone!”

And, for goodness sake, what kind of a statement was that? “I’m not going to give the fiending an answer!”
Kristen reminds me of a junior high girl, stomping her foot, tossing her hair, and saying “Well, I WAS going to tell you my secret, but since you’re so obsessed with finding out, I’m not going to tell now. So THERE!”

Kristen, dear, I really think the “fiending” already knows what’s happening with you and Rob. I mean, the two of you rarely go out in public without the other in tow. You’re not exactly subtle. But, what you ARE doing is winding up the “fiending” along with taunting, demeaning name calling. Frankly, your actions don’t jibe with your words asking for privacy. You’re making a bigger deal of this whole dating thing than it deserves. Just be open and quit taunting your fan base. You’re also making you and Rob more of a target for the agressive paps. Now they’ve been challenged: “catch me if you can!” LOL!

  • kit says:

bwen said “Anyway you are great at what you do….upholding journalistic integrity!”

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Stop it, you’re killing me. This site and the folks who read it would be the first to link and leer at any site which had photos or video of Rob and Kristen engaging in PDA. That site would be down from all the traffic. If Gossip Cop had the incriminating photos, they’d post them. Or sell them to another publication/website so they wouldn’t sully their own “journalistic integrity” with such “icky” items. *snort*

  • truthinmedia says:

“Her private life – like Pattinson’s, like Lautner’s, like everyone’s – is private. The celebrities who let fans get a glimpse of their lives are the ones who do so willingly and happily. They are not browbeaten or blackmailed into it.”

I agree 110%. If celebrities do not wish to share their personal lives, it is not the media’s job to pry it out of them by all means necessary!! GO KRISTEN! She is my brand new hero!

  • crmomof2 says:

I finally read the entire article in Entertainment Weekly. Boy were her comments taken out of context. She didn’t say that she was a lesbian, she wasn’t being rude to the Taylor or Rob. She wasn’t taunting the fans. For the most part you get the impression that these three actors get along and that it was a pleasant interview.

Any one who becomes angry with this girl over this interview really hasn’t read it. Basically she is saying that no matter what she says people will are going to think what they want. She is correct to say that her private life should remain private and if you really read the article the other two feel the same way.

She was just setting the record straight with what she was willing to give away. She never said that she was hiding anything and she didn’t confirm or deny anything.

Let’s be real some of the paparazzi are very aggressive, insulting and downright threatening. I really respect this girl for speaking her mind. There are quite a few tabloids that publish downright lies and not just about her. The people that purchase these periodicals are adding fuel to the fire. What we think that we know about celebrities are just fabrications.
