WATCH: Glee References Britney Spears’ Meltdown — Mean or Fair Game?

VIDEO

(FOX)

“Glee” again paid tribute to Britney Spears on Thursday night — but this time, the show wasn’t as nice to the pop icon.

In the episode, after Brittany S. Pierce (played by Heather Morris) is cut from the cheerleading squad and held back a year in school, she channels Spears’ infamous 2008 meltdown.

VIDEO BELOW

Morris’ character almost shaves her head and threatens a school reporter with an umbrella — as Spears notoriously did during her highly publicized breakdown.

She also gives a terrible rendition of “Gimme More” while eating Cheetos, which is an allusion to Spears’ 2007 MTV Video Music Awards performance that drew less than rave reviews.

Check out the video below, courtesy of tooFab.

Tell us: Do you think the episode was too mean — especially considering that Spears appeared on the show in the past — or it is fair game to reference the singer’s meltdown now that she’s doing well again?

It’s just a tv show. chill out

So what it is a show having some fun. Last nights episode had some bad spots but over all I think it was one of the better ones in the past few years. I hate that Santa and Dianna Agron have not been featured. The new girl is cool.

I have been watching Glee from the beginning And I have to say that these last two episodes have been really, really boring for me. If this is what we can expect for the rest of the season, I may have to tap out.

As far as the Brittany/Britney meltdown, I have to say that it was a little uncomfortable to watch, especially considering that this was supposed to be a “tribute”. But as someone already said, it is just a TV show.

I loved it. The show highlighted everything about Britney that is and was real. I do have to admit that I found the best parts of the episode to have nothing to do with Britney Spears… i.e. Brittany’s math test and Lord Tubbington’s new gang affiliation.

Glee has never taken itself too seriously. It’s part of the humor of the show and part of what makes it what it is. When they DO try to take themselves too seriously, the show fails and feels like an after-school special. To me is was a great episode and far superior to the previous Britney episode.

Fair game and funny fair game at that. The overall end message was pro Spears as it was about working to overcome problems and making a comeback,. Besides, Britney herself is now appearing on a show that regularly puts on people with no vocal talent and questionable mental health for the sole purpose (obviously) to mock and laugh at them. Isn’t that “mean” too?

its a little ironic for a gossip site to even be asking this question. especially if said site was one of the MANY media outlets to report on her melt down. u guys ran w/ every story just like sites like TMZ did. so i cant really understand why ud even ask if we think it was mean for them to reference her breakdown. do u guys think u were mean for putting her on blast as much as u did when it all went down and even after by referencing it multiple times afterwards bt posting links to those articles when u reported on her? thats a fair question, right? :)

im only suprised they did it bcuz shes now working for Fox. both shows air on that network, so im a little taken aback by the lack of professional consideration and/or respect

I think any instance where someone is making fun of another
person’s downfall is plain mean! I haven’t seen the episode myself, but from
what I’ve read here and heard from the ladies around my office at DISH, it
sounds like Glee took some really low blows. I wasn’t interested in watching
the episode at first, but now I have to see what all the hype is about! It’s
lucky that I have it recorded without even bothering to think about it, since
my Hopper DVR’s PrimeTime Anytime feature auto-records everything on the major networks
during primetime hours, or else I would’ve had to miss out on this
controversial episode. For Britney’s sake, I hope it’s not as bad as it seems!

Saw the show. It was respectful. Topic is fair game as it was a huge media story. And it was well done on Glee.

it was kind of mean BUT fair enough. (mean) because i dont think its ok to make fun of a situation in which a person health, privacy and safety is in jeopardy. (fun) because it happened and they dare to do it!…ppl like morbo and thats what they were feeding them self with at that time! press made a fortune chasing and exploiting this girl. YES it all happened in plain sight but that doesnt mean they had to chase her the day they did!!!
