The Girl On The Train is the highly-anticipated film adaptation of the best-selling book of the same name. Emily Blunt stars as a depressed alcoholic who becomes obsessed with watching a couple through a train window. The thriller moved full-steam ahead at the box office, where it opened at number one with $24.7 million.

That was enough to push last week’s chart-topper, Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, down to second place. Also an adaptation of a book, the Tim Burton movie raked in $15 million for its second weekend. In third was Deepwater Horizon, with ticket sales of $11.8 million. A haul of $9.2 million put Magnificent Seven in the number four spot. Ranking right behind in fifth was Storks, with $8.5 million in receipts.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Nate Parker’s controversial movie, Birth Of A Nation, which debuted with just $7.1 million for sixth place. The family-friend Middle School: The Worst Years Of My Life secured a seventh-place finish with an opening of $6.9 million. Sully came in eighth with $5.3 million, which Masterminds took ninth with $4.1 million. And nabbing the last position was Queen Of Katwe. The movie earned $1.6 million.
