Gigi Hadid, Jay Pharoah American Music Awards Video: Watch AMAs Opening!
The co-hosts were first seen in one of the Microsoft Theater’s upper levels to introduce the opening performer, Bruno Mars. They then took to the stage themselves after walking through the star-studded audience. After Pharoah pointed out that fans choose the AMAs winners, Hadid received a few laughs for saying no one has to worry about the electoral college. And Pharoah quipped it’s the “90s all over again” with Green Day performing and a “white guy” as the president.
Pharoah went on to do his Jay Z impression after cracking that Beyonce’s Lemonade follow-up would be called “Arnold Palmer.” Hadid then debuted her first-ever impersonation, doing Melania Trump with a nod to the future First Lady’s plagiarism scandal, and Pharoah took on Donald Trump himself. The opening also had a musical component with the two rapping the names of celebs in attendance.
This is the first time Hadid and Pharoah are hosting the AMAs. They follow Jennifer Lopez, who hosted in 2015, and Pitbull, who emceed in 2014 and 2013. Hadid’s prior experience includes hosting the Much Music Video Awards earlier this year, while Pharoah, best known for “SNL,” has also brought his famous impressions to the MTV Video Music Awards.
Pharoah has a voice role in the upcoming animated movie, Sing, while coming up on Hadid’s schedule is the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Of course, this is a pretty big career milestone, too. Check out the AMAs opening video below, or click here.
