George Clooney: Donald Trump Is A ‘Fascist’
George Clooney reveals his opinion of a few of the presidential candidates in a new interview. The actor describes Donald Trump as a “xenophobic fascist,” voices his support for Hillary Clinton, but also admits he “loves” Bernie Sanders.
“I met Donald once,” Clooney tells The Guardian about the GOP frontrunner. “I was sitting in a booth and we talked for a while. Then he did ‘Larry King,’ and said I was very short. And I was like: ‘I was sitting down the whole time, Donald!'” The actor then goes on to acknowledge it’s “crazy” that the idea of the real estate mogul getting elected president is becoming a possibility.
“He’s just an opportunist. Now he’s a fascist; a xenophobic fascist,” Clooney says. “In election season, things go crazy, and the loudest voices are the furthest and most extreme.” The actor goes on to note that Trump’s “massively stupid idea to ban Muslims from the country” will never happen, pointing out that the phrase “bring us your huddled masses” is inscribed on the Statue of Liberty.
As far as who Clooney is backing in the upcoming election, he says, “I am a Hillary supporter,” and reveals he’s “doing a fundraiser for her.” And although the Oscar winner’s vote will go to Clinton, he adds, “I really love Bernie Sanders, and am really glad he is in the debate.” Clooney also notes that Clinton’s Democratic rival is “forcing the conversation to things that never get talked about in U.S. politics: disparity between the rich and the poor, which is getting worse and worse every day.”
