Gary Ross Reportedly Not Directing Hunger Games Sequel Catching Fire

Truth rating: 5

(Scholastic)

A report surfaced Friday claiming The Hunger Games director Gary Ross has opted not to direct the blockbuster’s sequel, Catching Fire.

Ross, who received raves for the record-breaking first installment in the franchise, wants to focus on a different project, according to IndieWire.

Gossip Cop has reached out to reps for Ross and Lionsgate for confirmation, but have yet to hear back.

If true, Ross wouldn’t be the first director to bail on a major movie franchise.

Chris Columbus said goodbye to the Harry Potter series after the second flick, and the Twilight Saga series had different helmers for the first four films.

Catching Fire, which will bring back Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, is slated to hit theaters in November 2013.

Gossip Cop will update when more details emerge.

even though i feel he did great BUT the whole shaky camera thing was annoying if he stays i hope he doesnt do that again and if he doesnt i wish Chris Weitz (a better life) directed Catching Fire

    Yeah, he’s superb

  • Dr Snake

He didn’t get raves in the 4 reviews I’ve read. He got ripped deep, wide and hard for his limp hackwork.

  • Dr Snake

Yeah, the whole shaky cam thing (I call it “fidget cam) has to stop. It’s silly when it’s not nausea-inducing. In an action movie, I want to SEE the action not guess at it.

  • Danny

The movie itself got many positive reviews, the only criticism I saw for him was his shaky camera technique.

  • Lindsey

I loved the first, just not the shaky camera. I’m glad i’m not the only one. lol

  • Ian

You’ve got to be kidding. Chris Weitz did a horrible job with New Moon, he cut all the emotion out of it, and he proved he doesn’t know how to frame a shot or direct action. I think the guys at Lionsgate are smarter than Summit, they won’t get near Weitz. They’ll go with an action director, and since the cast will be the same, it will all be fine. As long as Jennifer Lawrence is on board, that’s really all that matters. She is the franchise, and they’re lucky to have her.

Your ignorance is showing, Dr Snake. You read 4 reviews? That makes you an expert, right? LMAO. Grow up, and do some research before you make a fool of yourself. THG is super fresh on RT, it has an 85 percent positive rating. That’s practically unheard of, especially for a film that’s been in the theaters a couple of weeks. The audience approval rating is even higher.

Audiences love this move, and give Jennifer Lawrence the credit. She carries every frame of this film and is the new actress of the decade.

Gary Ross adds, “I’ve worked with amazing actors. Someone like Jen comes by once in a generation. I mean, this is an unbelievably rare thing. This is Michael Jordan, this is Baryshnikov, this talent is almost stunning to witness. There’s nothing you can ask her to do that she can’t do.”

“What’s remarkable is the lack of cheese. Tacky effects, corny dialogue and creaky performances are all shown the door. We repeat: not the new Twilight.”
