Game Of Thrones Season 5 Episodes Leak Online Hours Before HBO Premiere
New “Game of Thrones” episodes leaked online this weekend, just hours before the show’s scheduled HBO season 5 premiere.
The new season of the highly-popular season isn’t slated to officially kick off until Sunday night. But the first four episodes have already been uploaded to file-sharing sites, making them available to millions across the world. And with only 10 episodes slated for the season, that means nearly half of the new batch is available for illegal viewing.
TorrentFreak says the episodes have already been downloaded more than 800,000 times. The security breach is a major blow for HBO, a subscriber-only service, and for “Games of Thrones,” which tends to keep plot details under wraps until each episode airs. In a statement released Sunday, the network says, “Sadly, it seems the leaked four episodes of the upcoming season of Game of Thrones originated from within a group approved by HBO to receive them.”
HBO further adds that it is “actively assessing how this breach occurred.” The statement appears to confirm that the leaked episode were screener copies, potentially ones sent to television critics, who typically receive shows in advance in order to review them before airing. Still, the responsible party could be anyone who handled the material.
“Game of Thrones,” of course, has been pirated countless times before, so much so, in fact, it has regularly topped torrent lists over the last few years. These circumstances, however, very may well affect ratings. Gossip Cop will have updates.
