Frank Ocean is opening up about his sexuality, revealing he was in love with a man.

The R&B singer and member of the Odd Future hip-hop collective made the revelation early Wednesday in a heartfelt letter on his Tumblr blog.

“4 summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too,” wrote Ocean.

He went on to admit the unnamed man was his “first love,” and that the experience caused him to reflect on his past relationships with women.

The performer’s letter, originally written in December and meant to be included in the liner notes of his upcoming album, includes thanks to those who kept his secret and kept him “safe.”

Ocean opted to post the note on his blog after a UK review of his album, Channel Orange, pointed out that his lyrics include “he” and “him” instead of “she” and “her,” sparking rumors about his sexuality.

In explaining his decision to come out, Ocean wrote, “My hope is that the babies born these days will inherit less of the bulls**t than we did.”

After Ocean published his letter, Tyler, The Creator, who’s the head of Odd Future, gave his friend and collaborator props for coming out.

Tyler tweeted, “Finally… @frank_ocean,” adding in a subsequent post, “My Big Brother Finally F***ing Did That. Proud Of That N***a Cause I Know That Sh*t Is Difficult Or Whatever.”

I think it took a lot of courage to come out. I think it’s absolutely wonderful. I’m sure there is more than a few people in the hip hop community who are gay and haven’t felt safe enough to come out.

brave enough for society at large… braver still in the otherwise tolerant world of music… while not typically an issue for pop, genres such as hip-hop, rock and country have had very few people come out, and those that have have been ostracized…

chely wright was advised by john rich not to come out…

rob halford did a period of penance of sorts before judas priest came to their senses and welcomed him back in the fold…

“the boondocks” did an episode about a fictional gay gangsta rapper (i like how mediaite spellcheck doesn’t correct gangsta) that was allegedly based on a real rapper… but having seen the episode a few times i couldn’t tell who it might have been…

elton john was no shock in the 80′s during his mtv pop days, but i suspect coming out during his classic rock heyday in the 70′s would have been problematic…

never heard of odd future and therefore, since i’m a music snob, they likely suck… but hopefully mr ocean’s future will be bright…

Yay…now move on. Don’t care where his weenie goes. So glad when being gay or bi or in love with ducks will be a “non-event”.

  • Mandy

Wow straight men are an endangered species. Everyone is gay these days.
