“#FireColbert” became a trending topic on Twitter on Tuesday over Stephen Colbert’s controversial “c*ck holster” joke about Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. See video and reaction below.

On Monday’s “Late Show,” Colbert delivered a blistering monologue that was inspired in part by Trump’s interview with John Dickerson. The president insulted the revered CBS journalist, calling his show “Deface The Nation,” and now Colbert was keen to fire back. Looking into the camera as if he was speaking to Trump, he slammed, “When you insult one member of the CBS family, you insult us all!” Colbert then delivered rapid-fire insults, including, “The only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s c*ck holster.” The network bleeped “c*ck” in the broadcast.

While the crack seemed to get an overwhelmingly positive reaction from the studio audience, others on social media have deemed it not just lewd, but also homophobic and an inappropriate comment to make about the commander-in-chief. The clip circulated online throughout Tuesday, culminating in the “#FireColbert” hashtag. But not everyone using the phrase wants the TV personality to be fired. Conservatives are calling on CBS to do just that, but liberals are countering that such a punishment is unjustified.

Among the Twitter users calling for Colbert to be axed was @Gregii, who tweeted, “#firecolbert It is time to get him off the air. He is an embarrassment to humanity as we know it. He must go. Where is his sponsor list?” @Muriel395Muriel exclaimed, “That man should be fired right now! #FireColbert That was the most disrespectful comment I have ever heard and I am appaled! Shame on you!”

“If @billoreilly was let go for accusations then @StephenAtHome should be fired for his homophobic statements! #FireColbert @CBS,” posted @RottenRonnie7. @vballcoach50 also argued, “#FIRECOLBERT Imagine the outrage had this been said about Obama. The double standard is like nothing I have ever seen. Fire this POS!” And referring to the head of CBS, @dollardude wrote, “Les Moonves @CBS do the right thing and dismiss Stephen Colbert what he said about the President is inexcusable #FireColbert.”

On the opposing side, however, @emilyorl tweeted, “Literally every conservative that is tweeting #FireColbert tweeted about how freedom of speech is under attack like 5 days ago.” @TheSnobCompany pointed out, “Remember when you elected a president who admitted to touching unwilling women but want the comedian fired for a lewd joke?” @realamyedwards commented, “#FireColbert …is ridiculous. I loved his rant. Good for him for going off on a true bully.”

And @HotDammit even posted, “#FireColbert #HIRECOLBERT There, I fixed it.” One celebrity weighing in was Rosie O’Donnell, who reacted to the outcry on Tuesday night by tweeting, “#giveCOLBERTaRAISE.” Offering a very different assessment was Jedediah Bila of “The View,” who wrote, “Stephen Colbert’s comment about Trump was disgusting. Not funny, not creative. Just plain awful.” Neither Colbert himself nor CBS has addressed the backlash. Check out the video below, beginning at the 10-minute mark.
