“Finding Dory” Wins July 4th Holiday Box Office Weekend
Finding Dory has won the July 4th box office weekend, despite threats from three newcomers. As Gossip Cop has reported, the sequel to Finding Nemo had a record-breaking opening last month. It then just kept on swimming to hold on to the number one spot for a second week. And now it has topped the chart for the third time in a row, with $42 million in ticket sales.
The Legend Of Tarzan, starring Alexander Skarsgard in the title role, had to settle for a $38.1 million second-place debut. The Purge: Election Day opened with $30.8 million to nab third. Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of The BFG opened in fourth with $19.5 million, while box office receipts of $16.5 million put Independence Day: Resurgence at number five during its namesake holiday.
Rounding out the Top 10 were Central Intelligence, with Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, in sixth with a haul of $12.3 million. The Shallows had a seventh-place finish with $9 million. Meanwhile, Free State Of Jones secured eighth place with $4.1 million, and The Conjuring 2 took ninth with $3.8 million. Just making it into the Top 10 was fellow sequel Now You See Me 2. The film earned $2.9 million in ticket sales.
