“Finding Dory” Wins Box Office In Second Weekend
Finding Dory applied its “just keep swimming” mantra to the box office, where it topped the chart for the second weekend in a row.
As Gossip Cop reported, the sequel to Finding Nemo made history last week when it earned the highest-grossing opening for an animated movie in history. Now the movie has easily hung on to the number one spot with $73.2 million. Though that’s more than a 40 percent drop from its debut, it was more than enough to keep some new competitors at bay.
The Independence Day sequel, Resurgence, had to settle for second place with $41.6 million. Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson’s Central Intelligence dropped down to third with $18.4 million. And the less kid-friendly ocean tale, The Shallows, debuted in fourth place with $16.7 million. A box office haul of $7.8 million put Matthew McConaughey’s new movie, Free State Of Jones, in the number five spot.
Rounding out the Top 10 were The Conjuring 2 in sixth with $7.7 million in ticket sales, and Now You See Me 2 secured seventh with receipts of $5.7 million. Coming in eighth with $2.5 million was X-Men: Apocalypse while Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows nabbed ninth with $2.4 million. And just making it into the Top 10 was Warcraft with $2.1 million.
