Extremely funny parody. The book is really good though.

  • Sheelly

If you think the book is good, then you’re so stupid that you’d believe me when I said you can buy the Brooklyn Bridge from me for, say, $1,000.

  • J.E.

Seriously, you wouldn’t say that to someone’s face so why be mean like that?

  • Melanie

The fact that this was ~published and people are pretending it’s an actual book and not fanfic run wild makes me want to weep for humanity. All the abusive issues aside, the actual writing is horrific. I read it as fanfic right up until the tampon pulling scene and wow. Awful writing. AWFUL.

  • Anonymous

It’s not pretending to be an actual book. It’s published. It’s a real book. It’s obviously good writing (or at least good ENOUGH writing) to please a lot of people. If you didn’t/don’t like it, how nice that you have a choice not to read it. To each his/her own. (I sure wouldn’t “weep for humanity” over it. Surely there are many issues more worthy of such emotion,) In the scheme of things, I fail to see the reason for such strong reactions about this. Honestly.

  • Melanie

You almost hit the reply button correctly. It’s not a real book. It’s fanfiction. The only reason anyone ever knew it existed is because it used the characters of Edward and Bella in its original format. It was self-published initially. And people with no taste and sexual repression issues fangirled all over the damn place and got it attention.

And saying “if you don’t like it, don’t read it” is by far one of the most ignorant ~arguments ever used. How is anyone supposed to critique or review anything or know if they like or not unless they read it? And the fact that anyone thinks this qualifies as well-written IS reason to weep for humanity. I don’t only use that emotion for horrific tragedies. I use it for the dumbing down of humanity and the rise of abusive males as romantic leads as well because I think it’s sad. Honestly.

  • Helen

I didn’t read it but I know what it is and I think that the whole idea of this thing is a cheap shot at making more money on Meyer’s Twilight.I’m not a big fan of Twilight, but I hate people being greedy with no bounds and trying to make some cash on sb else’s work.

  • winning

So do you think porn movies are “real movies” because they are released on a DVD just like other real movies are? Do you think Anal Cheerleaders 4 has the same artistic merit as Schindler’s List?

  • Rhythmchyc

When I read this as fanfiction a couple of years ago, I thought it was incredible. I had never read this kind of BDSM before. There have been stories in that genre I’ve read that were purely sexually driven that didn’t interest me. This story about an a**hole with a whip and a heart gold was something that I was drawn to almost despite myself. As I read more fanfiction, however, I found that this was… pretty terrible.

It’s not written well. The premise is appalling. And Christian’s disposition is abhorrent. How women swoon for THAT is just gross to me. But this is America. And people like Jersey Shore and Justin Beiber, of course they’d like Fifty Shades of Grey. And of course, they have a right to.

I just think it’s sad that this fanfiction has captured American women so much. And it frightens me that people will think Twilight fanfiction is exactly like that.

  • Seasha

I have read a million fanfics, well probably not a million but on the scale of the ones i have read this one doesn’t even hit the top 100. Now if they made Clipped wings and Inked Armour a “real” book I’d be down for that one!

  • durtyrob4ever

I read it to on fanfic and absolutely fell in love with the story. If you stopped reading after the tampon scene, than you have no reason to condemn it. That part was early on in the story, and if you stopped reading it, then you missed one hell of a ride. Hate to disappoint you, but after E.L. James posted the original as Masters of the Universe, and had the ff turned into the books, millions of people all over the world disagree with you! True the tampon scene may have been crass, but the rest of the story was incredible. Don’t go hating on the story when obviously, you have no idea what you are talking about since you didn’t even finish reading it!

  • durtyrob4ever

Melanie, I DID NOT MEAN TO LIKE YOUR ABOVE COMMENT BECAUSE I HIT THE WRONG BUTTON!! Who are you to critique Fifty Shades when you said above that you didn’t even finish reading it!! It is small minded people like you who talk crap when you don’t even know what you are talking about!! Fifty shades was not about ABUSIVE MALES at all! It was a story about an abused child who grew up and eventually finds love with a girl who helps him with his demons and falls in love with him. Before you start spouting your hate about nothing you know nothing about, READ THE DAMN BOOKS FIRST!

  • http://twitter.com/CarboV Violet Merjo

thhat’s why u liked it! by the way the books is crappiest of the crap crap along with Vampire Diaries books (NOT THE TV SERIES) which are totally different!

  • J.E.

I love how people comment on books they haven’t read. If it is not your thing you don’t have to read but how can you condemn a book you haven’t read. The three books have obviously evolved past the 3 fanfic mark. people keep tearing it down but it can not be that bad if so many people like it. It seems like people, no matter what are going tear down her success but they can’t because while people bitch and complain she is laughing all the way to the bank…. and those people are stuck in their life complaining.

  • Melanie

loll it wasn’t the scene, it was the crappy writing. The ellipses. The “oh my’s” the “oh jeez” IT WAS HORRIBLY WRITTEN. Millions of people watch Jersey Shore and love it. Millions of people can think whatever they want. Doesn’t change the facts. It doesn’t surprise me that millions of people like it. It’s the people like you who act like it’s well written that surprise and dishearten me. I don’t find anything incredible about a man who abuses a woman because he was abused as a child. I’m sorry that you do.

  • Melanie

I’d rather be staked face down to an ant hill than read those books in their entirety. (which I’m surprised he didn’t do to her btw) I’ve read enough to to form an opinion. You don’t have to like it or agree with me. And I’m so so sorry you think it’s a healthy love story. :( You might want to look into the issues behind that when you look into your obvious anger management issues.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mandi79 Amanda Way

I loved it when it was a fic and i love it now that it has become a book… Icy/ EL has done a wonderful job. lets see you do any better, do any of you write? if you think it is bad .. so be it. but ICY is cashing them checks honey while your still living hand to mouth don’t hate. Most of the fanfiction community such as myself are very proud of our sister and those who are not are simply jealous.. plain and simple. the books are popular and as always when one rises. another tries to tear it down. if you did not read the books or the fanfiction your two cents have NO merit at all.. WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU ICY and we love you.. Cant wait to see the Movie!!!!

  • Life’s too short

Melanie, stop hating. Find something positive to focus all of your negative energy on. You are bullying. Not cool.

  • Bjackson8648

IIt’s a book for open minded people who can step out of their “safe” lives and enjoy a great tale. It is not porn because it is a love story. Bad stuff happen to people and it effects their psyche. If you read all the books you would see the struggle that Christian has differentiating what he thinks he needs to true love. Ana is the heroine in this story, she basically saves him, and shows him he can have love. It’s not another Twilight. Maybe the themes are similar, but u can take books throughout history and say they are alike in different ways. I don’t know why u would have even bothered posting if you didn’t like the book. It must have affected you in some way, which is what is wonderful about books! I think this story is wonderful, exciting and let’s the reader step out of the box.

  • Super_nattie

If you had read the book you would know that it in no way resembles Twilight

  • Redwhyne1969

Hahaaa it’s a fun, fiction people! One made to take you on an escape of life’s stresses! I think it’s absolutely fabulous! E.L. James gets a big thank you from me. And to all you critics up there, please leave the titles of all your best sellers and I’ll be sure to read them! Hahahaaa

  • Super_nattie

Its fine if you dont like it, everyone is entitled to their own opinion but you shouldnt put people down because of it, all you are doing is proving yourself to be a bigot.

  • Amberkitavi

I have read all the books…..they were all awful and I wrote sexier erotic stories in high school….That being said it had a train wreck quality that I could not look away from……So bad you just have to see how bad its going to get….My biggest issue with the book is that its NOT sexy the sex is mild at best and now they are saying this is making women want more sex…..No women wanted sex before this book but of course we have to have the mentality that women hate sex….

  • J.E.

Interesting, your panning a book yet you read the entire series which means you put more money in the authors pocket. Most people don’t read the entire series of a book they hate so this is funny.

  • J.E.

Agreed, so how many of these people have EVER even tried to write a book? yeah…

  • Amberkitavi

Im sorry you think I bought it……no I never said I bought it…..I said I read it, there are many ways to get books with out buying it!!!

  • Sheelly

Yes, I have. Mine is written better, has a better story line, has proper grammar/edited properly, and isn’t plagiarized from Stephenie Meyer.

  • Sheelly

Are you serious? Everything about the characters is EXACTLY like SM’s stories. Erika Leonard stole EVERYTHING from SM.

  • Sheelly

Bullying? I think I peed myself. You’re delusional, LTS!

  • Tsanchotena

This is hilarious!! Loved it and love Fifty Shades!!

  • Suz

Lighten up! Go get a little

  • Sheelly

Open-minded? Now, I peed myself at that one. I read it in its entirely as MotU. I enjoy reading BDSM stories. The BDSM isn’t even real BDSM.

Furthermore, you just described Twilight… “she basically saves him, and shows him he can have love”

  • Sheelly

    A bigot? LMAO!!

Apparently you own the Dictionary for People Who Want to Make Up Definitions.

  • Sheelly

    Actually, I would.

  • Suz

If you haven’t read it then you have no room to judge or comment. Above all it is about relationships and give and take, compromises.

  • Suz

Ha! Some people are so “Vanilla”. Let us enjoy the series if we choose to.

  • Amberkitavi

Its not that im “vanilla.” Infact I would venture to say people who thought this books sex bits were hot are vanilla….I dont know if im desensitized because I enjoy porn and what not but this book wasnt sex or hot to me….

  • http://www.facebook.com/mandi79 Amanda Way

well i sure for one would like to read yours, sheelly. I write also

  • Loving Life

LOL… there are 31 flavors!!! Some may be vanilla and some maybe Heavenly Hash

I get it now Sheally…YOU ARE JEALOUS!!! I love it! Your a writer that no one is obsessed with!!!

  • Juliagrovenburg

  • Tcsamm

Melanie. You need to take a chill pill and open your eyes.

  • Regina1180

I know a ton of ladies that just started reading the books because of all of the press around them. I’d say 95% of them ha no idea that the series was Twilight fan fiction first. When I tell them (because I feel like this fact should be known), they either don’t care, or get turned off and stop reading.

  • Susanbirchall51

i thought this book would not be my cup of tea ( i’m English !) but it is the first series that I could not put down and when I had finished the last one I went back to start again ! It does not apsire to be Shakespeare but just a wonderful love story with redemption and Trust as its overriding themes Yes there is sex in it and a bit of role play stuff but it is not Porn I have read all The Twilight series and there are obvious comparisons but that is primarily because the inspirations are Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart as themselves NOT edward and Bella I have caught the fan fiction bug now and I say Good Luck to EL James if she brings a bit of light relief to her readers is that so bad !Also I thought the Amazon AD was freaking hilarious There is lots of humour in these books as well as thought provoking issues. Wouldnt we all like to meet a billionaire even a kinky one !lol

  • Kathy

To each his own I guess, but I really really liked the books!

  • Kathy

Exactly! Once you get through the first book, the story emerges more. This is so not all about BDSM, although the sex scenes were hot ;-) Loved the email correspondences between Ana and Chrsitian too! I’m a huge fan!!!!!!

  • Kathy

Christian never “ABUSES” Ana at all in these books. Granted on the writing but I still enjoy the books immensely!

  • Kathy

No…apparently you didn’t read enuff because you are spouting things about the books that just aren’t true. I appreciate people’s opinions, but in order to have an opinion about the books you have to read them in their entirety.

  • Joannrice09

I think you should go to the doctor and get your bladder checked, you seem to have a bladder problem, just saying.

  • DragonLady

Great post! I agree. It’s all about puffing one’s self up. She wants to think she’s more erudite and discerning than the rest of us peons. What a snob! I read all genres/types of books and enjoyed this read. I pity narrow-minded fools like this.

  • Roxannegjuarez

Sheelly…. Get laid and stop bring so freaking bitter! No one said you had to read it, get over
    yourself!

  • Kathy

    Very well said!

  • Baileyzuzu1

    u pee yourself alot!

  • Mommymc36

Fine if you do not agree with it being well written but putting people down for liking something you don’t shows……um….no class! Wait did I judge you? Yes, that was definitely wrong! People should not judge others! Was my post not written well???? Who cares??? Put your big girl panties on and get over it!

  • A Katherinesnow

Okay, okay. Let’s put this to rest. I am an editor, writer, and literary agent. I have read all three Fifty Shades books and I DO know what Melanie is saying. Book publishing companies get “thinly-veiled” Twilight fan-fictions all the time and by “thinly-veiled”, I mean, not veiled at all. And sadly, it doesn’t stop at Twilight fan-fictions, we reject several “thinly-veiled” fan-fictions all the time. Melanie didn’t finish the book. So what? Did you know that if we receive a full manuscript we’re only required to read the first beginning chapters? We can easily see their writing style and decide whether or not it’s time for the slush pile. The same with readers. If a book is slow, I suggest you stick with it, but if it’s a fast read, like Fifty Shades, and you’re turned off by the writing style, well, reading the entire thing is not going to change Melanie’s opinion. It truly has nothing to do with the story, though that’s part of it, it is badly edited, and badly written. Although, I don’t know if I could have done better, depending on what kind of shape it was in before it was sent to an editor.

    Back to the badly written.

Ana repeats herself, over and over again. This is a big “no no”! And maybe I could let that slide, if she was an original character, but really, she is just another whiny protagonist. Much worse than Bella. In fact, Bella almost looks… well, I wouldn’t say “good”, although I could easily read Twilight in her perspective and not be nearly as peeved.

Then you look at the similar things E.L. James has copied from Twilight because it was a fan-fiction. It’s like she didn’t even try to make it her own.

Rosalie – Kate – Both described as blonde, stunning, and tenacious.

Alice – Mia – Both fashion gurus and over the top cheerful attitudes.

Carlisle – Carrick – I don’t even have to explain this one.

Emmett – Elliot – Both playful men, brawny, and described as teddy bears.

Renee – Carla – Both scattered mothers who seem to be a little bit “out of it”. More into their marriages than children.

I could go on to Jose, Ray, Paul, Grace, and the rest of the character list but I think you get the picture.

Although Stephanie Meyer has faults in her own writing, (believe me she does) at least she made her characters from scratch. James took characters from Meyers books, changed their name, and tried to add a spot of originality to them. However, in the end, they were still the same characters.

Think about it this way, E.L. James would have never written this book had it not been for Twilight.

The only thing I can say to James is that even though, it is horribly written, not to mention the fact she flat out stole characteristics from another author, she somehow managed to capture millions of people and got published by Random House. Not because her writing was brilliant, but because they’re several, stay at home mothers, who want to indulge in a life they’ll never have. Pardon me, “escape”. Whatever. It sells millions of copies, she is on the New York Times. I can state my opinion, but no matter what, her success isn’t going to change until the Fifty Shades Of Grey fan-fiction gets turned into a book that also enraptures millions.

I suppose it gives hope to all of the “bad” writers out there that as long as their story can capture millions, they can do whatever they want. I can feel real writers from the 18th century rolling in their graves. Oh I can’t wait for all of the BDSM stories I’m going to be editing in the coming months. Joy.

No, perhaps she knows the difference between “bad writing that captures millions” and “good writing”. Believe me. There is a huge difference. My five year old niece could probably write a small novella and not repeat herself throughout the entire thing. This comes from an editor and literary agent. If I say I’m a writer will I be excused of being “jealous”? Please. This isn’t high school.

  • A Katherinesnow

P.S. Before I get attacked please let it be known, I enjoyed the read, and loved the ending. But I don’t consider it good literature or good writing at all. I know how hard it is to write a story, I give James props for her luck. I am on both sides here.

  • not_a_sheep

that’s because millions of people don’t know how to read properly. If someone understood how sentence structure worked and what a good plot is, with, um let’s say original characters, then I would go along with the book. But it lacks all of the above.

  • Mc93433

I just found the BSDM aspect to be unbelieveable. Its seemed like “bondage light”. I did read “the History of O” years ago and found that to be quite disturbing and not at all erotic, but a more realistic portrayal of people who live that lifestyle. Admittedly I know little of that lifestyle, but the book seemed more to feed in tho the fantasy some women have about being attracted to a bad boy, and then changing him, the average storyline of Harlequin romances and I did not buy it, and Ana’s constant whining got on my nerves. But on a positive note, 50 shades had a lot more sex than Twilight!

  • Vera

Well the parody on SNL was hilarious (that is what this article is about people). I did read the original inspiration for 50 shades and I enjoyed both versions. I’m laughing at the schmucks getting caught up in the “technicalities” of what the story was. Wake up people and gain focus in your life, the story is a fiction trilogy that has sold millions and will now be a movie. Have other stories followed this path previously ? Yes. Will it continue after 50 shades? Yes!

Somebody above made a comment about America always liking trashy tv using Jersey Shore as an example. I think your trying too hard. In America the real problem is everyone’s own ideas and likes be “correct”, that’s what we argue about. A rebuttal can be made for about any argument it all depends on what side your on.

I’m Team Anything that makes me happy.

“Team Anything that makes me happy” is the best team ever!:) as long as it doesn’t threaten anyone’s life or safety, let me read and enjoy whatever i like, whatever makes me happy. it happens again now.. firstly with Twilight, now with Fifty. who the f’ cares how it’s written, whether the author is a professional writer or not? . people criticizing the book to shreds wast their “precious” time. they call it cr*, yet every post on Fifty is followed by 60-100 comments. the haters should get some life and leave those who already have it alone.

Its a book! Read it or don’t, no one cares! I enjoyed it as well as many other fiction books out there.. Seriously, spending this much time on how you hate it is a waste of your time. Find something else to do for heavens sake. NO ONE CARES

  • Melanie

Just can’t win with you fangirls can I? I either shouldn’t read them because i didn’t like what I read, or I should waste hours reading three of these books and then, when I again say the author can’t write, you can all jump down my throat with “If you don’t like it, don’t read it”. That’s ridiculous. I read over 11 chapters of the first one. I gave it a longer shot than I give real books because by that point you know if you like the author’s style or ability. And can recognize that this author has neither style or ability. Maybe she will someday, I have no idea but she doesn’t with these ~books.

  • Melanie

loll” bullying”. It doesn’t surprise me that several of you defending this book also make up your own definitions for words. This is not bullying. If anyone is getting personally attacked, it’s me. I’m just stating that this is horribly written fanfiction that should never, ever have been published. You people defending it are the ones taking it personally and making it personal.

Perhaps you should re-read the comments above as, and again I’m not surprised, your reading comprehension is a bit off today. (that last bit was making it personal btw, if you need a bit of a guide through these complicated sentence structures) Have a nice day. :)

I’m not a Book reader and i’m right now on Book 2 of fifty shades darker and i have to say i’m enjoying it i cant put the book down i cant wait to read book 3 , Everyone has their opinion’s But if you dont like it than dont read it simple as that.. I haven’t read any of the twilight book but i thought twilight was about vampires and how the girl fell in love with one.. I say there two different stories, So what no one is allowed to write a book story about love i think E L JAMES made it her own.. Yes ana might repeat her self but its just a story, I do love the e-mails they write to one another.. Time to read my book Fifty shades and I LOVE IT!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/Sprout0912 Connie Lagle Daugherty

Honestly…. if you know little of the lifestyle, then you are not one to judge which book is the more realistic portrayal… truth is…. both have their strengths and both have their weaknesses in their portrayals… but neither is very accurate overall. In truth, each book is simply one person’s imagination run wild.

The reality of the lifestyle is actually much more down to earth, while at the same time, 50 Shades Hotter and 1,000 times more erotic than either of those books are capable of describing.

  • Krissie

Or she borrowed the books from the library or from a friend, so she didn’t have to buy them herself…there are other ways to read books than just buying them and giving money to authors who publish fanfiction.

The problem is NOT the book. The problem is SOCIETY. The same society that loves The Jersey Shore, and the Kardashians and turns a turd like Robert Pattinson into a movie star in the first place. Its a society thats so repressed sexually that this POS, that while amusing as a fanfic, should NEVER have been a real book….seems like the greatest thing since the Vanessa Hudgens sex tape. Its a society of blind lemmings and laughable trends, and apparently, weve become SO weak, that James could fool and pray upon that stupidity just to make a few bux. She manipulated her core audience and has NO right to have a hit at all. Id go on and on about the reasons thats so, but why bother. PEOPLE KNOW THEM ALREADY! The same way they know that Snookie is just a braindead whore, but shes on the cover of ten thousand magazines and the same way the having 14 kids is deplorable and idiotic in todays society, yet the Octomom got her own TV show. The problem isnt in the book…..the problem….as always, when something is glaringly obvious to those with half a brain can smell the refuse…..it STILL becomes front page news. You wanna blame someone….blame yourselves. Falling for a fraud is just the MO for todays enviornment. And its not nessacarily new either. Dean Martin once said, in 1961, when speaking about the popularity of the Rat Pack “Were just the flavor of the moment pally….someday everyones gonna wake up, take two asperin with tomato juice and wonder what the hell all the fuss was about.”

This is surely not the first best seller that a few people didn’t like. Remember the super head chronicles?? Karin Steffind made a mint and she writes like a toddler. LOL better ways to spend a Sunday afternoon I’m sure.

  • CLB

Erotic romance is not a new thing. There are far better ones out there. Far hotter, too. The SNL parody was funny, but believe me, there are plenty of other books that would have me in one of those positions long before 50 would even come close. =P It just didn’t do it for me.

Look, If 50 Shades of Grey was your introduction to this sort of thing, please do yourself a favor and dig deeper. You’ll find some awesome books by wonderful writers who actually know something about plot and characterization (and WRITING, for that matter).

I’ve seriously been scratching my head over why these books, out of all the others I’ve read, have been the ones to blow up. All I can figure is it’s the Twilight thing, and that’s…really sad.

  • Jillee

No way the movie can be as good as book:))

  • Melanie

You can’t seem to make up your mind. If someone has read all of the books and formed an opinion you don’t like then you make fun of them for that. If someone read enough to know they didn’t want to read more then they don’t get an opinion at all. This is how someone argues when they’re a raging fangirl. And it makes you and your opinions very easy to dismiss so this is funny.

And most people who have read these books didn’t pay for them or put any money in anyone’s pocket.

  • Melanie

I love how fans of these books act like they’re some higher evolutionary form of a sex kitten. I have seen very few people who have issues with the sex. I certainly don’t so being “open minded” isn’t the issue. But nice try. I don’t care about the sex or the bondage or the “love story”, I care that THE WRITING WAS AWFUL.

And that sounds exactly like Twilight, sorry sweetie. Just another book where the ~heroine’s magical vagina saves the over-controlling asshole from himself. Never mind the cost to her or how she’s treated while he figures himself out. I mean, in the end she gets her man right? Apparently that’s all that matters. /sarcasm

  • Meg

Wow! People are fired up about this. Shouldn’t we just be glad that people are READING??? Who cares what they are reading! We all spend so much time with technology, I’m just glad there are people sitting down and reading a book. I could care less about what people prefer to read, or the writting style, etc., it’s nice to know that a book/story/fan fic (whatever you want to call it) can capture so many people and get them to READ! It’s so important, and literacy is still a huge issue even in 2012. Let’s just encourage people to read and not judge them for what they like.

  • FawkYoo

Then you’re a cunt. With a stupid ass name.

  • Sandra

I am just wondering why you are wasting your time criticizing a book you didn’t read in its entirety and think is so terrible anyway. Take the books for what they are: entertainment. No one is comparing these books to Pride and Prejudice for Christ’s sake! The Twilight books were God awful as well, but I still found them entertaining. Sometimes people just need a good, light, and entertaining book that they can turn their brain off and read just for the pleasure of reading. I personally found them enjoyable, and I think the real novelty of the books is the exploration in to non-judgmental human sexuality. I can see how that would make the rigid feel uncomfortable.

Melanie, if you need help wraping your taken way too many lit courses and are now a lit snob mind around it, think of it as art. There is Pablo Picasso, and there is Thomas Kinkade. Both are considered great artists by some, but only one of them is truly good. However, both of their works are enjoyed by some people (albeit not necessarily the same people).

Don’t be critical of what you haven’t read, and take things for what they were meant to be. Life is too damn short to get into Internet fights over something so stupid.

  • Susanbirchall51

A womans largest sexual organ is between her ears ! fact women are stimulated in their imagination far more so and in these books EL James writes all of the various stimulae Scent sounds visuals that women find so much more erotic than men immediately do I think that these books are smut made easy without all the effort in real erotic classics and obviously the response is that lots of women are being turned on ( possibly for the first time in a long time ) Real Life can get overwhelming and this is just escapism ! There are those that worry that turning on a whole load of women to horny fiction is going to interfere with Real life ( Thats why the SNL parody is so spot on ) Its just a story that women would like to relate to We arent all going to find a billionaire to worship at the Temple of our Inner Goddess but it sure sounds like fun Lighten up people.

You’re a liar. Lol. Fifty shades IS Robert Pattnson and you know it, which is why women are so enthralled with this craptastic Twi fan fiction. The women denying that Robert/Edward from Twilight is 50 (Christian Gray) are the same maniacal envious bitter bags that are upset Pattinson ruined their fantasy love lives by having a real-life cute little girlfriend. Lmao it’s so funny to see this pathological phenom unfold. Deny it all you want but your just proving the psychoanalysts right when you mouth off about your ‘tons of lady pals,’ that don’t associate their fap fic with Twi, and stopped reading it when they found out…bahahaha, yeah, they found out Patz was the inspiration for 50 and put the book down mid orgasm. Lol stfu, liar. That’s why they bought the shite and you know it, because it’s why you bought it, the very fact your angrily and resentfully b*tching about someone/something everyone knows, tells the tale…your resentful, and that’s for a reason. I’m glad the Twi kids have bodyguards, some of the bags out there are pretty unhinged…the love/hate/deniers like you are the weirdest.

“person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one who exhibits intolerance or animosity toward members of a group.”

I think the definition sums it up perfectly, YOU on the other hand- well theres really no words to sum up what you are, the words sad and pathetic come to mind. The fact that you have nothing better to do than put people down in an online chatroom only proves that your life must really be shit. Poor you!

  • Liezzz

If the millions of women that read 50 shades or Twilight were all, or even mostly, ‘stay at home moms,’ as you stupidly and wrongly suggest, the country’s GNP would rival Haiti’s. You had me, until you let fly with your gross micharacterizations of the readership behind these books. If you’re an editor, I’m Michelle Obama. These erroneous female stereotypes of yours, are the exact reason why publishers/filmmakers will continue to be unprepared and fumble the ball, missing these moneymakers out of the gate. twilight is the 5th most read book after The Bible, Harry Potter, and Lord of The Rings…at its heart, it’s a simple romance, as is 50 Shades…romance is the biggest best selling genre of fiction there is. There aren’t that many stay at home moms. Do the math, and stop denigrating the audience, if you want to be successful at your claimed (heh) chosen profession.

  • Super_nattie

Oh you wrote a better story? So what are you doing at the moment? Sitting at a computer being hateful to people you dont know online? what is E L James doing? Oh thats right shes attending book signings and pocketing loads of $$$. Maybe with a better attitude you will get somewhere in life.

  • Saddupe

She described twilight, because that’s the derivative Einstein. Just like formulaic romance is the derivative for Twilight. This isn’t rocket science, and women who are fapping don’t particularly care what you social scientists think of the ‘feminine construct,’ of this book series. I mean, really? So as some woman is getting ramped up with her busy fingers dwn her pants she’s supposed to stop and consider the suppression oppression of the feminist meme within the text by the male hero? This is what blows your cover as a so-called sexual progressive…if you don’t require men to write a thesis on their p.orrn/masturbatory material, why in hel.l would you require it of women? Grow up. You miss the point. The readers of these books, the watchers of twilight, aren’t critiquing/reading Hemingway…they want to get off with a simply p0rny little love story. This same formula has resulted in the best selling genre of fiction, I.e. ROMANCE, for years…I am amazed some people, especially women with their head up their crotch and not much else, can’t see that. Read the best seller lists for the last two decades.

  • Saddupe

If EL James is such a bad author and should never have been published, because you would have seen how bad her writing was in the first few chapters, then I want to know WHO gave Nicholas Sparks a contract to write these boring novels that he writes ?

I have been trying to read The Lucky one for 3 weeks, and have not made it to the middle yet. Nothing in my post mentioned “artistic merit”. That wasn’t the issue I was addressing. I said they are published. That makes them real books. What I meant was…REAL, as in a concrete object. (Fanfiction stories are not REAL books as they are not in BOOK format.) So…to answer your question, yes, if a porn movie is released on DVD, it is a real movie. It is a tangible something you can watch on your television…just like Schindler’s List. Again, I wasn’t in my former post, nor am I now, discussing artistic merit. I thought that was obvious.

  • TS0516

I totally agree with you. Christian was very hard to like in the beginning but as she stood up to him and held her own, he began to change and realize he was good enough to be loved and didn’t need to be feared. I am now reading them for the second time and just realizing how much happens in them. I’ve laughed and cried, I love the pool table!!! and it has really perked things up here with me and my husband. Not necessarily in the way you might think. I learned from Ana that if you really love, you are responsible for your partners happiness and you make that your purpose and in turn, he does the same for you. It has worked and we are closer than we have ever been. LOVE LOVE LOVE these books. I have to agree the writing is not great, never want to see the word Flourish again, but it seems like it is written in the perspective of a young girl in love for the first time.

  • TS0516

While she may not be the greatest writer, she should have passed it on to another editor, she is one of the greatest story tellers. The way things unfolded, so much happened, things I never saw coming. If you can look past the writing the story is amazing.

  • TS0516

read quickly, 50 shades freed is just as good but a little disappointing in the end. The only other series I have been this taken with was the Hunger Games Series. I couldn’t put those down either. Enjoy

  • TS0516

snow patrol was just on the Tonight Show. They were one of Ana’s favorite bands. I had never heard of them before. Not Bad

  • Melanie

wow. You really went there. Nice. If you were an actual therapist worthy of the job you would never have typed that.

I’m not the one being hostile. If I’m the one in this comment section whose hostility is bothering you, you’re not reading all the comments. I never said it was negative towards women. I said the main male character was an asshole to the main female character. There’s a difference.

  • Melanie

Actually, forget the whole “if you were a therapist worthy of the job” part. If you were just a decent human being you wouldn’t have said that. Period.

  • Melanie

oh for the love of god and for the twentieth time, I don’t care about the sex scenes. I was not offended by them, they did not make me uncomfortable. I don’t care if the whole world faps to these books or turns their brains off while reading them. They’re perfect for both of those things I’m sure.

I cannot fathom why people are so touchy and sensitive about me not liking the writing. Why do you all care so much? I think they’re horribly written. So what? If you like them, read on and have fun. And I DID read enough to have my own opinion. I didn’t bash the story in itself except to say I think Edward/Christian is an asshole. I bashed the writing. THERE’S A DIFFERENCE. I don’t have to read a whole damn trilogy to know I don’t like the way it’s written. I can form that opinion within the first couple chapters. Writing style is writing style. It doesn’t change from page 25 to page 850. The story changes not the writing style or the things about it that annoy you when you’re reading it.

And I’m not a lit snob. I read a lot of fluff, fanfiction, historical romance novels, all genres, any kind of book out there really. I just don’t read writing like this. Because it’s awful writing. Not because of the sex or the storyline or whatever you guys want to think my issue with it is.

And if you think life is too short for internet arguments then don’t engage in them.

  • Melanie

Well Saddupe it won’t let me reply to you directly but I have to say, you went so far reaching on this one it boggles the mind. Talk about missing the point…

It certainly doesn’t bother me if women find this sexy. If that’s their thing, then that’s their thing. I said the writing is awful and I didn’t like the characters. Why my opinion is so threatening to everyone I have no idea. I’m not judging people for getting off on it. I’m not even judging people for liking it for what it is, so much as I’m judging and arguing with the ones who think it IS Hemingway. I’m judging the damn writing. Last time I checked I was allowed my own opinion on that.

I didn’t say it was bad for women to read it or fap to it, or fucking bronze it for all I care. It’s cute the way people like you seem to read my comments and then make arguments that have nothing to do with what I said. I certainly didn’t ask anyone for a thesis on why they get off on what they get off on. I SAID THE WRITING SUCKED. Good grief. Get off on whatever you want to get off on. Read books, shitty or not, with sex you find hot and fap to your heart’s content. I’ve read books with asshole male characters that I found fap worthy. This just doesn’t happen to be one of them. I find Edward/Christian to be too much of a controlling asshole and the love story unhealthy. If you don’t, then you don’t. I don’t care what makes you put your hands down your pants but if you have the opinion that he’s a good man in a good relationship, I AM allowed to have a different opinion. That doesn’t blow my “cover as a sexual progressive”, I haven’t even been talking about the sex or people finding it hot for god’s sake. And contrary to what you apparently assume, a lot of women’s brains work even when their fingers are busy. They think it’s an amazing, well written love story they want to emulate. It’s not just a little book of porn to everyone who has read it.

It was an interesting argument you made, if a bit hostile, and if you’d made it to someone it actually applied to, it would have been better served. I didn’t ask anyone to defend their getting off on it. People like what they like. Finding him to be a good man? Now, that, I did ask people to defend when they brought it up. Not that they’d want him to spank them.

And none of that changes the fact that it isn’t written well and is in desperate need of editing. Little book of porn or not. Einstein.

  • Melanie

so..no e-book is a real book by your definition? No book published only in digital format is a book? You’re going to have to adjust that definition in the coming years I think.

My saying it isn’t a “real” book is because it started as fanfiction. It doesn’t use original characters. And despite what people seem to think, they ARE influenced by the original characterizations of Edward and Bella when they first read this. The ones who read it now, who don’t know it was fanfiction, might not be, although i find that unlikely as all the press has flat out said it started with Edward and Bella as the characters. People are, at minimum, subconsciously influenced by who they knew Edward and Bella to be before E.L.’s version of them. So, in my opinion, this isn’t a “real” book. It’s fanfiction and will always be fanfiction. Self-published fanfiction that fangirls got enough attention that someone decided to cash in on it. That doesn’t make it a “real” book to me. I mean, of course it’s in book format lolll. Everyone knows that. That has nothing to do with whether or not I, myself, just me, consider it a “real” book. It’s Twilight fanfiction with a binding.

  • Melanie

I meant to add that the fact that E.L. has been honest about how it started is actually a huge point in her favor in my opinion. She could have lied as others have done and she didn’t. I can respect her even if I don’t like her writing.

  • Tkrn99

Apparently the world enjoys the book regardless of your views on how it was written…Christ…open your mind. Think of all the books that people have condemed over the years. If the plot makes you uncomfortable then don’t read it,no one is forcing anyone to read it, btw…totally hot book!

  • Anonymous

    book/bo͝ok/
    Noun:
A written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers.

I guess by my definition (which is the same as the one I’ve copied and pasted above), I would have to say e-books, if that’s the ONLY format they’ve ever been in, AREN’T what I would consider a REAL book. They are a REAL story and a REAL E-BOOK….they’re just not a concrete, hold it in my hands, REAL book. (When I first got an e-reader, I and almost everyone else I talked to who had one said we still liked REAL books…so yes, there is definitely a difference for me.) Now that the fanfiction is in the form defined above, for me, myself, just me, it IS a REAL book. That’s all.

  • Anonymous

How magnanimous of you. I’m sure she’ll sleep better at night knowing that you approve of her honesty, at least.

    Gah….now I’M getting snarky!

Look…of course you don’t have to like her writing and you can think it’s crappy and bad. That’s perfectly your right. I think most of the issue here has been the superior tone you’ve taken in what you’ve written and the fact that it seems that because YOU say the writing is horrible, it must BE horrible and that anyone who believes otherwise is enough to make you “weep for humanity”. This became more than just voicing one’s opinion. It became a lecture and when you lecture other people with a denigrating attitude, most people tend to be put on the defensive and will definitely push back.

    Enough with the pushing…

  • Insat

It woul have never been written if it hadn’t been for Twilight. It was Twilight inspired fan fiction, wasn’t it. Besides, from what you’ve written I can already see how pathetic it is. One might as well watch a cheap porn instead.

  • Renee

This story is not about a man who abuses a woman…if that is what you got from the book maybe it is less about the book being poorly written and more about your reading comprehension skills. This is a story about a woman who saves a man from himself and his wretched past. He does not do anything to her that she has not consented to.

In every bedroom across the world you will find that the likes and dislikes of the couples behind the door are vastly different.

Ana allows Christian to find himself and willingly searches for a way to meet his needs in a way that she also enjoys. Yes they did things that she did not enjoy…but never was it abuse…she willingly engaged in those activities only to discover it was not for her. Have you never tried anything out of curiosity only to say never again?

    Think about it…

  • CJRDH

Embrace your sexuality Melanie and let your body tell you if it’s “horribly written” Woman are reading this to spark a fire in them and trust me it has sparked a fire in many bedrooms. Christian never physically abused Ana he was always kind to her and if you look in many nightstand drawers across the world you will find most of the “toys” they used.

  • Kate Louise Holt

Really enjoyed the books, though I must admit that Ana got on my tits a bit with her repetitive “Holy Shits & Craps” lol. But so what if it could have been written better, other huge sellers such as Twilight & Harry Potter are also poorly written but they entertain and spark an interest in readers…. Books are escapism pure and simple. I’ll read anything and everything, from Mills & Boon to Dickens & King. Just take it for what it is, a good read with faults admittedly but also with romance and kinky fuckery!! lol. And come on the Tampon scene wasn’t that bad!!

That’s really all there is to it I’m afraid.

Cheers to those out there who actually know how to read and finish what they start.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KHN7ECDGKZ3YR4JIPHFFASYAXY Franki

Personally I enjoyed the story. Was the writing the best no but the story was good. Now on to complaints i have read. Christian never abuses Ana physically things may go too far during their excitement but he provides her with a safe word tells her if it gets to much to say something and asks her permission , from the beginning tells her what kind of person he is, she willingly takes this on and has the ability to say enough. That is not abuse. Second the BDSM isn’t even “real” – according to you. Not everyone practices everything the same exact way shoot not everyone has even basic sex the same way that hardly means that because I do it different Im not having sex. Third I get this was written originally as twilight fan fiction and while I get some of the parallels I also think this book blows twilight out of the water I like twilight but I hate sparkly vampire I like them dark and broadening. Now the most important statement of them all. IT IS A BOOK – FICTION/FANTASY meaning the scenes do not have to accurate 100% and that most importantly ITS NOT REAL its for your pleasure and you either enjoy it or you don’t but there is no need for name calling on those who do or don’t like it my goodness. Different taste people some people like “vanilla” and some people like “more”.

GREAT. Perfect. Exactly. The only part I object to it the stay at home mom stereotype. I am one, and have no interest in these books or the Twilight series for that matter. Plenty of my working mom friends are enthralled by both series. Just because a woman chooses to spend 5-10 years taking responsibility for her kids rather than paying someone else to, being unlucky enough to have had them with a man unwilling to take responsibility, doesn’t make her want to read garbage, or copy-cat garbage.

  • Mishhubby

just because you didn’t like doesn’t mean others don’t. the thing has been on top on the ny best sellers list for a while. my wife and i are going to read it together to see what all the fuss is about. i think you should use other terms than “stupid”.

  • http://twitter.com/TweetBelsey James Belsey

Melanie – you do not have a fully informed opinion due to the fact that you didn’t read the whole thing, which does pose validity issues with your statements.

Everyone else – why are you biting at every little thing. the fact that you are arguing on a website called “gossipcop” would immediately ring alarm bells for someone looking for a rational, logical, and perhaps unbiased critique of a book. You’re not going to find too many logical thinkers on a website like this!

(and before you start turning on me about that last point… I only came on here as I didn’t know what all the fuss was about with this book and it was one of the first results that came up when I googled it)

  • Michelle

I couldn’t agree with you more, but I am enjoying the books even as I roll my eyes (he he). And I’m not a stay at home mom, just for the record.

Chill out J.E. I don’t know why you think that a book is good simply because a lot of people have read it. Let’s just say these books will never be on any literary reading lists, except as an example of the crap people used to be into. It’s Jersey Shore in print, but TONS of people are addicted to Jersey Shore. It’s badly written, poorly plotted entertainment. Won’t be the first or last.

The books for the sexualy repressed. “Let’s read about something we would never do or really enjoy in real life with a real partner and then talk about it like it’s the most awesome thing ever!” Since when did sexual deviance become so mainstream that it’s accepted as good reading? Just because they print it and put a nice cover and clever title, and it’s been on the NY best sellers list doesn’t mean it isn’t shit. It’s funny how people get sucked into likng something they would normally talk shit about… but I guess if enough people get into it then it must be good. Just like riots and mass histeria. Have you ever heard of “Mob Mentality”? Bunch of Lemmings… Sheep…. Baaah Baaaaah.

i have read many things, some written well, some written horribly but if the story is good the bad writing can be for given. I think a lot of people that are complaining about how bad it is written really don’t like the subject matter. What I don’t understand is why are people being attacked because they enjoyed the book. It is a book, fantasy, pretend, not real, entertainment nothing more. It is not about domestic violence or child abuse. I think people are to quick to judge others.
