“Fantastic Beasts” Wins Box Office
The Harry Potter franchise put a spell on moviegoers again. The new installment, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, easily won the weekend box office. Get the details and check out the full Top 10 below!
As Gossip Cop has reported, Fantastic Beasts is a prequel to and spinoff of the Potter films, and is inspired by the textbook used by students at Hogwarts. The tale, however, takes place in the U.S., where magizoologist Newt Scamander loses track of, well, some fantastic beasts. And the new movie marks the first in a five-flick series.
Now in its highly-anticipated debut weekend, Fantastic Beasts grossed $75 million. That’s a career high for stars Eddie Redmayne and Colin Farrell, but a lower opening than all of the original Potter films. Still, it was more than enough (several times over) to be number one this weekend.
It was a much tighter race for second, where Dr. Strange narrowly edged out Trolls. Dr. Strange earned $17.67 million, while third-place finisher Trolls took in $17.5 million. With ticket sales of $11.8 million, Arrival secured fourth. And a haul of $7 million put Almost Christmas at number five.
Rounding out the Top 10 were Hacksaw Ridge in the number six spot with $6.8 million, while Hailee Steinfeld’s The Edge Of Seventeen nabbed seventh with $4.8 million. Bleed For This came in eighth with $2.35 million, and The Accountant took ninth with $2.1 million. Just making it into the Top 10 was the Shut In . It earned $1.6 million.
