Fans React: Ryan Lochte Charged With Crime In Brazil
Ryan Lochte was charged with a crime in Brazil on Thursday, and now fans and critics of the swimmer are reacting to the new development. See reaction tweets below.
As Gossip Cop reported, Lochte claimed he was robbed at gunpoint in Rio during the Olympics earlier this month. It later emerged that an armed security guard had detained the athlete and three fellow U.S. swimmers over alleged vandalism at a local gas station. Lochte has since admitted to “over-exaggerating” his version of what happened.
Now authorities in Brazil have charged Lochte with filing a false police report, an offense punishable by six to 18 months in jail. But since the Olympian has no intentions of returning to the South American country and it is not a charge for which he can be extradited, it’s unclear how the case will progress. Now many on Twitter are sounding off on the news.
@Robertgreiner71 tweeted, “Brazilian cops have now charged Lochte with filing a false robbery report, a crime. What a fiasco! Thanks for nothing Lochte!” @rettiwtmk2 argued, “Some jail time might make pretty boy grow up.” And @LegallyPrepped said, “Lochte better get a good lawyer. He will NOT last long in a South American prison.”
“Ryan Lochte isn’t a bad boy he’s a grown man who committed a crime and who needs to get his mint green head out of his ass,” wrote @erinvermeal. But others didn’t agree with Brazilian officials escalating the case. @samantha_chang, for instance, wrote, “Lochte was a moron but this is harassment. There was (and is) a ton of crime there. Gimme a break.”
@AnoctiibnSina posted, “#Brazil #BrazillianPolice get over the #Lochte thing.. did he report a crime officially? Yes be pissed! You strong armed & extorted $11,000.” @Xquinn_devinC remarked, “I get the ‘Lochte is an idiot/dumbass’ but the irony of Rio police Sherlock-ing/filing charges is ridiculous…Focus on ur real crime probs”
And then there was @orumeena, who admitted, “#Istilldontknow what Ryan Lochte did. Only that he did it. Hmmm. Wondering if I should care and find out.” As for Lochte himself, he has not commented on the charge, but tweeted on Thursday about scoring his first endorsement deal since getting dropped by other sponsors. “Thanks to all the folks at pine bros. for your confidence in me. I look forward to making you proud,” he wrote.
