“New Moon” Sets Three-Day Box Office Record

Vampires and werewolves are Hollywood’s new kings.

Sources tell Gossip Cop “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” has set a (non-summer) weekend box office record, taking in an astounding $140.7 million since it opened nationwide at midnight on Thursday.

The film’s record-smashing first night paved the way for a three-day haul that “eclipses” all previous weekend windfalls (except summer’s “The Dark Knight” and “Spider-Man 3″).

The estimated international box office take for the three days is $258.8 million.

OTHER MILESTONES & NOTES:

- $140.7 million playing at 4,024 theaters for a per theater average of $34,965.

- Best single opening day ever surpassing THE DARK KNIGHT ($67.2 million)

- Biggest 2 day total to reach $100 + million ($115.9 million to surpass THE DARK KNIGHT’s $114.8 million)

- Biggest November opening in history surpassing HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE ($102.7 million)

- 3rd biggest opening weekend ever surpassing PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN: DEAD MANS CHEST ($135.6 million)

- Best gross for midnight shows ever at $26.3 million surpassing HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE ($22.2 million)

    Don’t tell the rest of my Twi-hards, but I haven’t seen it yet. I wanted to wait until the kids had a chance to go so I can actually sit through the movie and hear the dialogue, not screaming. :)

    @Regina: I went to the midnight show worried about the same thing (I’m a 37 yr old father) and I was shocked at how quiet everyone was. Sure there were moans and all when Jacabs went shirtless, but the rest of the time – silence. This isn’t a shouty chattery movie.

    I’m just wondering if all this numbers will grow more and more with each of these movies… The 3rd one is already being expected, even before the release of New Moon… And definitely if the 4th one gets to be done (and I think I will, considering Summit said the green light would be given according to how New Moon went… tho, not confirmed yet)… IF Breaking Dawn gets done, I’m sure it will break each one of these records!

    Tho, by this point, I have to admit I think there has been an over-promotion… there was so much spoiling for my taste, and past weekend twilight was everywhere, literally EVERYWHERE!… It’s like… W-O-W!
    I reckon many fans love that, yes, I know… but it might reach the point that it gets annoying, and it might also lose the mystery-expecting-feeling of going to the theater and find a movie you’ve never seen… I know spoilers didn’t show the whole movie, and that is a personal decision to click or not, but still… things might get “negative” when too much sweet is put over… ;)… JMHO

    @Regina, also: I too thought there would be talking and some giggling but none. I went on Sat. at 1pm and most attending were adults, 17-19 girls and boys, and some fathers with a couple of young girls. Very, very impressed on how quite the twiligters were :)

    @Facebook: Why so hard on GC? Don’t you know that each journalist has their own exclusive no matter what time they put the words into print. What is the matter that you have to bash on GC, when this is the best journalist. And I have seen you on here several times and you should have read where GC stated that he puts his work up after 6:30pm so he can all the days news together.

    Fact is fact no matter when the words are put into print.

    Hey dmsm24…..that’s “grammar” not grammer. It’s “quiet” not quite. As well, Gossip Cop is a website. Referring to an entire website and a “journalist” is erroneous. Finally, if the news belongs to the “day” then it’s possessive, as in “day’s”.
