Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc was giving a speech to mark the end of Ramadan earlier this week when he told the crowd, “A woman should be chaste. She should know the difference between public and private. She should not laugh in public.”
Thousands of Turkish women took to Twitter to post selfies of themselves laughing with the hashtags, #direnkahkaha (resist laughter) and #direnkadin (resist woman) as an act of defiance.
Watson, who is a Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women, joined the group by sharing her own photo laughing photo.
