Emma Watson Starts “He For She,” Pleads For Men To Join Fight For Gender Equality
Emma Watson has joined forces with UN Women to launch the He For She organization.
He For She is described as a “solidarity movement for gender equality that brings together one half of humanity in support of the other of humanity, for the entirety of humanity.”
The goal is to get men to accept the following pledge: “Gender equality is not only a women’s issue, it is a human rights issue that requires my participation. I commit to take action against all forms of violence and discrimination faced by women and girls.”
Watson tweeted on Sunday night, “Wonderful men out there. I’m launching a campaign – #heforshe. Support the women in ur lives and sign up here now!”
The actress’ social media appeal comes one day after she made a poignant and impassioned speech at the United Nations in New York City as a Goodwill Ambassador.
Watson spoke about feminism often being mistaken as “man-hating,” and argued that men must see the issue of gender equality as their problem, too.
“You might think: who is this Harry Potter girl?” she told the crowd. “What is she doing at the UN? I’ve been asking myself at the same thing.”
Watson went on, “All I know is that I care about this problem and I want to make this better. And having seen what I’ve seen and given the chance, I feel my responsibility to say something.”
The movie star, who graduated from Brown in May, received a standing ovation for her speech.
