VIDEO: Emma Watson Gives Powerful Speech About Women’s Equality At Davos
Emma Watson delivered an impassioned speech about gender equality and women’s empowerment at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Friday. The actress and activist, who serves as a UN Goodwill Ambassador, made headlines last fall when she helped launch the HeForShe program, which seeks to involve men in the fight against sexism. On Friday, Watson introduced the campaign’s IMPACT 10x10x10 initiative at a Davos event attended by world leaders and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The program attempts to compel institutions, governments and businesses make “concrete commitments” to gender equality. Watson said it was the next step in the work she and others began last year. “We are tapping into what the world wants: to be a part of change. Now we have to channel that energy into purposeful action,” she explained.
Watson expressed astonishment at the millions of views and social media interactions her September speech generated, and encouraged the movement to go forward. “I’ve had my breath taken away when a fan told me since watching my speech she has stopped herself being beaten up by her father,” she told the attendees. “I’ve been stunned by the amount of men in my life that have contacted me since my speech to tell me to keep going, and that they want to make sure that their daughters will still be alive to see a world where women have power and equality, economically and politically.” Watch the video below, and tell us what you think.
