Emma Watson to Play Belle in Beauty and the Beast
Emma Watson will play Belle in a new live-action version of Beauty and the Beast, a rep confirms to Gossip Cop. The actress was cast in the role by director Bill Condon. The movie’s script was written by Watson’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower director Stephen Chbosky.
After news broke, Watson wrote on Facebook: “I’m finally able to tell you… that I will be playing Belle in Disney’s new live-action Beauty and the Beast! It was such a big part of my growing up, it almost feels surreal that I’ll get to dance to ‘Be Our Guest’ and sing ‘Something There’. My six year old self is on the ceiling – heart bursting. Time to start some singing lessons. I can’t wait for you to see it. Emma xx.”
The Harry Potter star had previously been attached to a different take on the Beauty story with director Guillermo del Toro. Disney’s animated version of Beauty and the Beast was a commercial and critical smash hit in 1991. It became a long-running stage success on Broadway.
Last week, Watson gave a powerful speech about gender equality at the World Economic Forum in Davos, announcing the launch of the HeForShe campaign’s new IMPACT 10x10x10 initiative. She last appeared on the big screen in Noah, and has a number of forthcoming projects, including Regression and Colonia. Are you looking forward to seeing her as Belle in Beauty and the Beast?
