Elyjuh René Declared Voice Frontrunner After “Perfect” Performance (VIDEO)
Elyjuh René was declared the “frontrunner” on Tuesday’s “The Voice,” the second night of the live playoffs. The contestant was one of Pharrell’s five contestants to perform, and René got a standing ovation for his very first live performance of the competition.
After singing “Latch,” he had not only Pharrell on his feet, but also Gwen Stefani and Adam Levine. Stefani exclaimed afterward, “Wow. Oh my god.” She went on, “The way that you can just walk on the stage so smoothly and be singing like that at the same time is really mind-blowing.” She further said the song was a “really good choice,” adding, “You’re really talented.”
Levine was nearly rendered speechless, and visibly struggled to collect his thoughts. He started out by repeating “wow” several times, and went on to say, “It’s unbelievable how good that was.” The Maroon 5 rocker continued, “I can ‘t believe what I just saw. That was the most precisely perfect, soulful, amazing [performance]. You just became the frontrunner on one of the strongest teams we got.”
“Everything that they’re saying is right,” noted Blake Shelton. “The way you navigate a melody with all the different runs… I definitely think you’re one to beat on Pharrell’s team.” Pharrell, of course, echoed their view. “I agree with everything they’re saying. I also want to say I’m super proud of you. You came up here and showed up everyone who, what, when, where, why and how Elyjuh René is Elyjuh René,” he said.
René’s performance was all the more remarkable because in the previous Battle and Knockout rounds, many thought Pharrell wrongly chose to keep him over competitors Maiya Sykes and Ricky Manning. As Gossip Cop reported last month, Pharrell agreed with his fellow mentors that Manning shined, but kept René on his team, arguing that the fact that he has “more work” to do was a good thing. The coaches were completely shocked by his decision, and Stefani ended up stealing Manning for her own team, even announcing that she thought the move would win her the season. But it seems René and Pharrell are now getting the last laugh.
There are 20 acts total remaining, and Levine and Shelton’s respective five singers all performed on Monday, with Pharell and Stefani’s tonight. On Wednesday’s results show, each coach will see his or her group narrowed down to three to form the season 7 Top 12. America’s votes will determine two of the advancing artists for each team, while the third will be up to the coach to choose from the three that remain.
